Default Good Cam for California Car...

Hey guys... been looking at cams lately for a future purchase... I live in California so SMOG testing IS an issue... I'm going to be getting Long Tube Headers soon, so I know the visual inspection will be an issue for me, but right now that's not what really bothers me... I'm really just worried about passing the Computer/Sniffer test... So i'll be looking for a good cam that can still pass smog...

The car is a DD, and i'm looking to get somewhere between the 400-500 HP range... I eventually will be putting a set of heads on it, and have been leaning towards the AFR 205's as these are also Smog Legal. As of right now at this exact moment of time I really don't have many mods performance wise except for Intake and SLP Loudmouth Cat-Back. My car is mainly modded up in the suspension area right now... so i'm looking at moving on to the performance area...

A few cams i've looked at are:

GM Hotcam Kit

Thunder Racing Cam: 99-TR224/224-114

Speed Inc/Comp Cam: SI4 224 228 .581 .588 114

I've read up on this for a while... I've heard with a good tune things could possibly work...

Also I get the duration, lobe seperation, etc... but the part of the specs that says .581 and .588 what is that for? I've noticed it's different from cam to cam... I've also noticed some people say don't use 1.8 rocker arms... so I'm guessing i should stay with the 1.7's

what else would i need to purchase (parts wise) to do a successfull cam swap without anything else breaking down on me...

Thanks guys!

Specs are in my sig if you need to know anymore...

the .585/.596 bla bla numbers are " of lift. you need springs. with a cam in the .580" of lift range, i'd get comp 918s. you can pick up a set for $100 bucks from people that bought them and upgraded. you'll also need hardened pushrods. mine are 7.4" i hear you can use 7.425" for less valvetrain noise.

TR224 is the biggest you can go and pass the snifer. I have heard of a few guy's passing with TR226, but i personally have never met anyone that has.

400 rwhp smog legal is doable. 500 rwhp is a rare sight even in a stock motor that doesn't worry about smog.

400 is doable besides power isn't what I am after 11's are....

and it's just like my buddy says, "if you own a Z06 or any vette most people expect you to bring it. Same goes for a camaro that is so loud you can't stand behind it." But when you car looks stock and sounds stock but runs 2 seconds quicker and still passes smog, thats what I am after

Then go with ported heads, a 224 cam and some rhoads lifters..that will help you're duration out a little. mid range should look great!

I agree. Get the best heads you can afford. Then I would get a custom 224 degree cam tailored to your car and the supporting mods. Maybe Patricks torque cam at 223 degrees.
