Default New oil

when i do the header install hopefully tomm night im gonna change the oild and alos fule filter and i work at a tire kingdom so i will prob do a fuel induction cleaning also to clean everyhting out. i was just wondering what kind of conventional oil everyone prefers reg conv. castrol gtx, valvoline 5-30, ...etc

castrol or vavoline would be goos. stay away from penz thou, its a waxed bases oil so it looks like crap when it breaks down.

Either go with mobil1 or go with the german castrol which alot of people on here use and i haven't heard anything but good reviews bout the german stuff.

mobil and gc are syn i dont wanna take the chance of goin syn so either reg gtx or valvoline or any other ones that any one has opinions about

whay don't you want to take the chance with syn? its not like older syn when thats all you could use when you put it in. you can switch back and forth as you please now.

Go Mobil 1 0w40 or GC (I forgot the weight--it's a 30 wt). With synthetic you don't have to change the oil as often (~5000 miles).

Mobil 1 5w30 FTW Stay away from Penz....it makes wax in your motor...also use a good filter (no fram)

Other choices would be 10W30 if ya dont want syn. ...... but dont know why you wouldnt.

b.c i have 86k on my motor and dont know what has been run through it and i dont wanna have blow-by or gunk everything up what kinda filter do you rec. and why not fram i've ran fram on a lot of hig perf. engines

frams ok. i don't think you would gunk anything up. if theres gunk in there already its done. you can do a full flush and use the oil of ur choice.

AMSOIL 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 synthetic motor oils are ALL 30 weight oils. The answer is that ANY one can be used regardless if your vehicle owners manual says to use, for example, a 5W-30. "W" means winter. In winter weather the 0W oil will flow like a 0W oil, and the 5W will flow like a 5W oil and a 10W will flow like a 10W oil just until the engine warms up. In order to understand the differences one has to first understand that the numerical values given to these various weight oils are strictly empirical numbers. For example, 0W does not mean that the oil has no weight. That is one of the reasons why we say it is strictly an empirical number.

In order to determine the differences between the three oils one has to look at the kinematic viscosity of each lubricant. The kinematic viscosity is essentially the amount of time, in centistokes, that it takes for a specified volume

of the lubricant to flow through a fixed diameter orifice at a given temperature.

Let's compare the kinematic viscosity of the three AMSOIL lubricants

AMSOIL 0W-30 is 57.3 cST @ 40 °C, & 11.3 cST @ 100 °C

AMSOIL 5W-30 is 59.5 cST @ 40 °C, & 11.7 cST @ 100 °C

AMSOIL 10W-30 is 66.1 cST @ 40 °C, & 11.7 cST @ 100 °C

As you can see from the data above the kinematic viscosities are extremely close. Therefore, whether you use the 0W-30, 5W-30 or the 10W-30 is strictly a matter of choice. With the small differences in kinematic viscosity you would be hard-pressed to detect these differences on initial engine start-up without specialized engine test equipment.

All three oils are excellent motor oils and ANY one can be used in a vehicle which requires either a 0W-30, 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil as well as in several other engine applications including an engine which recommends a 5W- 20 oil.

As for the Fram filter....take one apart.....nothing in there but string and cardboard

what was the M1 everyone was recommending? wasn't it Mobil1 5-40 truck and suv?

I thought it was common knowledge...search in the External forum for any of the big oil threads and that's what they are talking about in there (apparently the tolerances of the ls1 dictate a thicker oil for best results). You can also PM Patman he is the local oil guru and will agree with what I'm saying.

I perfer valvoline over gtx because it is clear. I would run a 5-30 or 10-40 weight. In my truck I run the valvoline durablend 10-40 and in my car I am actuatly running BMW 5-30(I work at a BMW dealer) it is made by castrol but it is clear, plus it is free. I run the PF 61 acdelco filter on all my LSx cars/trucks. It calls for a 47 I think?, but I like the longer filter. The engineer that made the engine also made the oilfilters. If they work for him than they will work for me is the way I see it. Plus they are only about $4 at Autozone.

Basically oil is oil, if changed on a regular basis than you should be ok.

AC Delco PF46 is the Factory Size Filter, which a PF61 is just longer which is good & Ive heard it actually helps w/ oil pressure. Id stick w/ either filter or step up to a Mobil1/K&N/Wix or any High $$$ filter. I use AC Delco b/c I work @ a dealer plus, it came on the car anyways. Im running Castrol non Synthetic in my car for now, but almost all the Walmarts here have 5qt Mobil1 5w-30 & others for $22. Add on another quart for the PF61 or .5 for the PF46 and youve got an oil change for around $30 dollars. But of course, do whatever you want

definitely go with GC 0W-30 or mobil 1 5W-40. STAY AWAY from mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30. most people are brainwashed into thinking mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30's are good oils for our cars, but in reality, they're watered down junk that protects very poorly and promotes oil consumption and engine tick/piston slap.

if you absolutely refuse to use synthetic, use castrol GTX 5W-30 for sure. castrol GTX is probably one of the best non-synthetics out there, and a very affordable one that that, too. $9.97 for a 5 quart jug at wal-mart, can't beat it.

yes. mobil 1 5W-40 is one of the best oils they've ever put out. mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30, by comparison, are both a disgrace. reason being, it's mainstream. it's their two most popular weights, and they make the most money off of them. they're watered down by comparison.

the thing you have to realize is a 30 weight oil varies by brand. mobil 1 30 weights are on the very low side of the 30 weight scale, closer to a 20 weight. GC 0W-30, my comparison, is on the very thick side of the 30 weight scale, closer to a 40 weight. while they are both 30 weight oils, the GC is much thicker. not all 30 weights are equal. mobil 1 is like water by comparison, a big reason why the LS1 eats it up so readily, provides a lower oil pressure and is so noisy.
