Default Educate me about RPM's

This is probably Auto 101, but I want to understand how this works.
First, my cam's powerband is 1500-5500
So does this mean all of my shift points should be set between those RPM's and the Rev. Limiter setting should not be above 5500 while at WOT. If the cam's maximum RPM range is 5500, having the rev limiter set above that would be over reving and would cause damage to the motor, correct?

It may not neccessarily cause damage to the motor, its just if u rev past ur motors max HP building range not only r u taking a chance on damaging stuff but ur also just wasting time going into useless rpms while u could have already shifted and be building power again....

The LT1 tends to make power a few hundred rpms higher than the advertized ranges due to the ultra short intake runners.

If peak power occurs at 6000rpms you will want to shift a little higher than that on the 1-2 shift in particular because of the wide ratio difference this way the engine is still up in it's powerband after the shift. You need to leave a few hundred rpms for the tranny to actually complete the shift too so if peak power is at 6000rpms you might set the shift point for 6100 or so and the rev limit for 6500. I am being general not making specific recommendations just trying to give you an idea of how all these points need to be spread out.

we need more information than what is posted....I have never seen an aftermarket LT1 cam have less operating RPM than stock....if the cam makes peak power at 5500 it does not mean it is making no power at 5501 etc.....my last cam made peak power at 61-6200 and I was hifting at 65-6600. Shift point will be a factor of HP and tranny/rear gearing

3.42 gears

Okay, Sorry. To be more specific this is my set up: 95 LT-1 T/A
A-4 4L60E Tranny w Trans-Go Stage 2 shift kit. This tranny was completely overhauled by my local GM dealer 30,000 miles ago. So, I'm sure it's nothing special. Shift kit was added about 3,000 miles ago along w a tranny cooler.

Just had this done:
Just installed:
Comp 502 cam 218/224 @50 with 495/503 lift
Comp Pro-magnum 875 lifters
Comp Pro-magnum 1.6 full RR
Comp 10 degree keepers and retainers
Comp Beehive springs
Cromoly PR
EGR and Air pump deleted
Gasket matched the intake

27,000 on lower half of motor.

Problem I'm having is the car from half to WOT goes up to 6300 rpm's and won't shift unless I feather the gas. The motor sounds like it is over reving. It shifts just fine during regular driving. So are the shift points off, the rev limiter off or is the tranny just to weak? And yes, I have a new mail order tune.

sounds like a transmission issue not a cam issue....

agreed, though at one point I had an aftermarket ignition go bad and cause a similar problem.

I never figured it was a cam problem. New opti and coil was installed w the above mentioned parts and this holding the gears problem existed before the cam switch. I believe the shift points are set too high, but wanted to get a better understanding to know if something else could cause this.
