I am about to buy a 99 Trans Am shell for the engine and trans to use in a swap. The seller and I had settled on a price of $4400 and I thought it was fine, but he sent me an email saying that

“The car sounds great. The only problem with the car that i know about is the 2nd gear shift fork is broke(original GM forks are plastic). They are cheap and easy to replace especially if you are taking the motor and tranny out for another car. there is a plate on top of the tranny and they are right inside that plate. Its nothing serious and I just wanted you to know so you dont drive all the way here and not want the car.”

I searched the forms a bit and found that the bent 3 and 4 forks were common, but I didn’t find much on the second ones being bent. I also found nothing about how to replace these. Is what he is saying about replacing them true? Should I still get it? Ask for more money off? Help.

Ther were no plastic forks used . Aluminum 3/4 forks and wallowing damage is well documented.The fix is as well= an iron fork. There is no plate on the top of the trans to"pug" the forks in. This repair will requite a full teardown. I would consider the trans requires afull rebuild inless you can drive/ function it ahead of time. You should allow the rebuild in your consideration.

So the only way to change the forks is a tear down?

Yes. The 1-2 fork isn't common to break. I'd suspect other issues like broken shifter keys, fork pads, or even worse chewed up synchro teath which would require a new gear. Anyhow, a full teardown is in order.

This is a good move if you could not negotiate a better deal. In cases like this , one could only consider the trans to have a core value( $250 in my book).
