Default Transmission Lines in '56 Chevy

I recollect someone saying they had just gotten original transmission fluid lines from something and ran them up to just behind the radiator, and had some flex lines made to hook up.

I'm using an original style (Griffin) radiator.

Any suggestions on what would be best to try to get those from? I was presuming they pretty much fit, except cut off where necessary, etc.

What trans are you using? I used a 4L80E trans and bought lines for a 04 2wd 2500HD from GM. The lines were reasonably priced at $19 each. I cut the ends off at the radiator and attached trans cooler line to go to the cooler and the radiator.

Default OEM / Repo Lines ...

Would not Repo trans like work for you (with modification as needed).. as they would or should have most of the bends in them to correctly fit around your frame and engine bay ?

Why not start with those and just rebend or cut / add flex (SS or rubber, make sure you use lines that can take the pressure, heat and type of fluid) lines as needed ?

You try some of the major Repo online stores or the major Tubing vendors. Some of the Tubing vendor will work with you for custom lines.

Polished Stainless Steel Line would look good as an option for your 56'

Sorry, I forgot to say. I'm using a 4L60e.

Would not Repo trans like work for you
I was thinking that repo lines would not have correct angles or fittings to fit to the transmission.

As for working with major tubing vendors, etc., I can sure do that. I was just being lazy, thinking someone had probably already cracked this egg and could make suggestions, although I originally posted this question in the tri-five thread and got no responses.

Gotcha..

I would think the Repo line would fit 85-90% of the fitment..if your Radiator (as you stated) is using Stock location and has the Trans cooler fitting in the Stock location...... it just comes down to the last 6-12" near the Trans.. which can't be that far off.. Couldn't be that far off where you couldn't bend some or cut and join a line to complete the fitment..

Well... that is my 2 cents.. good luck.

You know, that may be a good idea. Actually, it's just the reverse of what I had heard about and was thinking. Instead of flex lines at the radiator, they'd be at the transmission. This may in fact be much better.

In the GM LS1 installation handbook, there is a part # for GM fittings that thread into the 4L60E case, and allow for the old style fractional flare nut to be used. Sorry, I can't find my book, or I'd give you the # here.

At that point you go to www.inlinetube.com and order part # CFT55D3. That is a pre-bent trans line set tor 55-57 cars a w/700R4 transmission. Bolt in simple.

In the GM LS1 installation handbook
Cool. I don't have such a manual, but maybe I can go to a Chevy Dealer parts and have them find it.

Thanks!

That sounds like a good idea. I will have to put that in my notes .

I have the manual. In the section where they discuss the 4L60E, they indicate that the part number for the fitting is 8637742. You will need two of them. Some FYI, the top outlet/fitting goes to the transmission cooler and the bottom outlet/fitting is the return.

Thanks!

I have just received this week 700R4 transmission lines, and brass fittings for at teh transmission and the radiator, from East Coast Chevy.

Now, I just need to be sure the brass fittings are correct. If they aren't, then those part numbers will be very helpful.

I'll post back what I find out. Hopefully I'll be under the Kruiser this weekend.

Well, as I suspected, the transmission fittings I received from East Coast Chevy are not right. I'll be ordering the part number above. The ones for the radiator are OK.

Just thought I'd post here to possibly save others the same mistake.
