the stock exhaust on a 2002 z28. they say witha cut out it builds more
power, but that only takes away the muff. so what is the big restriction in
the exhaust. somebody told me thats a pretty high flower just stock..

i know its restrictive. but i have an 01 a4 b4c z28 and the only mods i have are slp lid and slp y pipe and i run consistant 12.90's all day long wich i think isnt bad. i do plan to do pacesetter long tubes and a magnaflow though simply to improve flow and loose some weight.

The muffler and that flat part in the y-pipe will cause the most restriction. Cats aren't that restrictive actaully with respect to other components of the exhaust system.

the stock cats really aren't too too restrictive compared to the LT1 f-cars b/c you only had 1 cat and that builds up backpressure. having a cat and each side is okay. if you want to go with hi flow cats... that's a good idea. i have a 02 z28 M6, the first thing i did other than CIA was install a the SLP LM catback. then i wanted more power and got the supermaxx setup. the stock y is flatten on the driver side. reason being is b/c that side of the engine takes longer to get warmed up compare to the passenger side. if you don't want to do the headers or can't afford it, the ramdom technology hi flow cats and y pipe is a nice system. i put that on my sisters 02 ws6 and it bolted right up to the stock headers oh so easy and looks good too! it was under $500. that was over 2 years so not sure how much it costs now.

regardless of what everyone is saying about the cats, y-pipe and muffler, the most restrictive part of the exhaust is the manifolds. You wont gain as much as adding headers by doing a y-pipe and catback with the stock manifolds.

Headers is the worst but any improvement over stock would he helpful, the least restrictive of all of them probably would be the stock cat back, comparitively to were you replace that and gain like 8-10 horses. I'll be finding out this myself soon. I just put a SLP kit (lid and everything), going to dyno, then swap in my Corsa from the LT1 car and a moser 12 bolt, im hopping the loss from the rear would cancel out the gain of the exhaust.

only if you have an SS or WS6. from the factory(none SS SLPs) the muffler is much smaller compared to the base z28 and formula T/As.

The biggest restriction is the stock manifolds.

the biggest restriction is the cats. 00-02 exhaust manifolds are really pretty great for a factory piece. Longtube headers and true duals are going to be the best solution for the exhaust question though.

get some 3.23 or 3.73 gears for that car! itll be a completely diffrent car.
