Default Anyone know why my cooling fans constantly run?

Well, I replaced my thermostat with a 160 degree one, put a whole new exhaust on from headers all the way back, and now my cooling fans constantly run. I took out my air pump, and blocked my EGR...I pretty sure that has nothing to do with it, although some things in life are strange. Anyways it is a 1998 Trans Am. Any Ideas?

Don't think just doing !AIR and !EGR should affect the fans like that. Is your temp guage reading normal (since you have a real one)? SES codes turned off for the air and egr? If not and have a constant light have the codes read - might have a code something to do with the fans ECT, IAT, etc. I've got my fans set pretty darn low and they don't run all the time.

I have not had it tuned yet and my fans run all the time, even up to 5 minutes after the car is shut off. My SES light is always on. My teperature gauge registers nothing, but it begins at 160 deg. I can run it really hard for 20 minutes, and the engine will be so cool I can take the radiator cap off!!! I am going to take it to the shop and have the codes read, I'll let you know what they say.

Stock gauge? If you're not getting any response from the temp gauge doublecheck and make sure the ECT sensor wasn't damaged during the header install, and is fully plugged in. If the fans are running after the car is turned off with stock tuning they shouldn't be on unless your overheating.

Yes it is a stock gauge. I don't suspect that it is overheating because I can take the radiator cap off pretty much anytime I want to after running it hard. I'm guessing it would have to be one of the sensors for the fans to run even after it is off. They turn on the second I start the car even after sitting all night long!!! After dinner I am going to double check the connections and take it to advanced autos because my buddy works there and they have a DEC reader. I'll write back if I still can't find anything new. Thanks for the advice.

Something's not right for sure - post the code(s) when you get them.

Something's not right. It probably needs a tune. I have the same setup but I had my 160 thermo though

Alright, the codes are as follows:

P0118
Engine Coolant Temp Curcuit High Input
(What exactly would this point to, I checked the relay switches and they were good..kinda obvious though???)

P0405
EGR Flow Sensor A Circuit Low Input
(Figured this would be because of my exhaust setup)

P0401
Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
(Figured this would be because of my exhaust setup)

Thought there might be an ECT code - check the sensor where it plugs in and the wiring, it's the brass sensor right next to the #1 exhaust port on the drivers side head - probably why your gauge isn't working too. I'd replace it, but more into here: www.gearchatter.com/viewtopic8760.php If you replace it, make sure you get one for a '98 - has 3 terminals vs. 2 on the '99 and up.

Okay, I feel like the most retarted person in the world, but you know it does happen. Things do get forgotten and overlooked. I forgot to plug it back in after putting in my headers...I appologize. Its such a small plug, and I need to stop making excusses. But I really do appreciate you guys for helping me track down the problem. I was about to give up troubleshooting and turn it into the shop. Thanks again.

Nathan
