If you want serious power your gonna need more than 1000 bucks, horsepower is nothing but a bunch of spent money.

wow, a grand really wont take you very far in the LS1 world. Hell, i had $1200 in just exhaust. Shop up the used section. To start off...
$100 Lid
$250 to $450 Cat back
$? tune I have a vinci ($430) tuner that works with our 98s. Can do cam swaps with it, !EGR !AIR !rear 02s with it too, speedo, fans, shift, torque mgnt.
$500 gears
$350 LS6 intake

Bottom line, this kinda budget wont do serious power. Serious power for an ls1 is 600hp.
Now, if you want to do all motor 400rwhp thats a different story. But you'll need about $4000 if you're starting from stock. If you hit the for sale section you might could do it cheaper.

Everything including the Vspring tools to do a cam swap is about $900.
Must have Intake, so $350
Must have headers so say $500 for ceramic and Y
or go TDs and only spend about $700 for all the exhaust
You'll want gears so either $500 installed (labor depending) or 12bolt or 9" ($2500)
Stall ? (hell im a 6speed, i have no idea what stalls run, maybe $600)
Lid $100
Tune from $250 to $450 depending on how you go about it.

Sucks, yes i know.

1000 bucks will get you a cam swap , wont get you heads too. So sounds like to me you need to pick you out a cam and all the supporting mods to do the swap.
but most likely you wont get 400 out of it without doin your exhaust and something to help get the air in.

A grand won't get you very much. Like Kurt suggested, look for used stuff to come out with a more "bang for your buck" situation. I'd suggest finding a set of used ls6 heads, possibly an intake too depending on the price...port the heads, and spend the rest on a huge cam. H/C swaps are about the cheapest way to get some power, and the LS1 is very good at making the most of simple mods like it.

You need to start with bolt on items like headers and intake first. Then a cam and a good tune so you can maximize your parts.

My headers and Y pipe were a grand. Shop around, look for the deals.

I still think the best exhaust bang for the buck is TheBlurLS1s old set up, TDs under the axle with a set of cats. It could be done for about $800, and then headers. Man, i've been pushing that setup pretty hard lately. But honestly it would flow very well, as true duals are known for doing.

SO 1000 on internals and 400 rwhp? Id say g5x3 cam, dual springs or shimmed 918's, hardened pushrods, ported ls6 oil pump (stock 98's suck), and then a used ls6 intake. Probably more than $100 but not by a lot. Then you need tuning of course.

my headers/ypipe/catback ran me 450 bucks from the for sale section on the site.

The first thing I would do to a stock A4 is SFC and stall (3200-3600), that along with a tune(and install) will prolly run ya close to $1000 if not more. Then you need a lid, port your TB, LS6 intake, LT headers, good cat back or true duals, decent cam 228 or 230 dur. with like .588 lift, springs, hardened pushrods, ti. retainers, Ported ls6 oil pump, LS2 timing chain,........for an extra kick you can get heads or port your stockers and save a little cash. all and all I am thinking the only way you will 400rwhp on a stock car with $1000 is on the funny gas. Sorry, hp is expensive......stock ls6 was rated at 405hp(i think it was) at the flywheel not the rear wheels, trust me you would be disappointed i think.

+1 on stall if you plan on modding later. 4000 or a 4400

then start saving another $1000 for headers and exhaust and intake

then another $1000 for a cam swap. and then youll be at the 400hp area with one of the big cams

I think i was pretty close with the $4000 budget to make 400rwhp, but you cant forget the nickel and diming that goes on too. Texas Speed is by far the cheapest way to get a cam. And unless you have twelve miles on the 98 you're gonna want an oil pump too.
$579.99 TSP Cam kit (cam, 918s, Pushrods, Ti retianers?)
$35.99 LS2 Timing Chain
$43.99 Gaskets and bolt
$139.99 Oil Pump
$115.98 Misc tools (crane spring compressor, air hose fittings)

dude i just say chill out for a little bit, save your money up, then get what you need to make the hp you want. You will be alot happier in the end with 440hp after saving your money on a descent setup rather than doin a 1000 dollar deal and makin 380 or so. Its only money you cant take it with you save it up then blow it all!

We've done a couple cam only M6 cars with the usualy bolt ons that have put down over 400 on our mustang dyno. You could probably get in the mid-high 300s with your budget if you already have the exhaust.

$1000 for heads and cam .... parts only ....that will make more power and help you reach the 400 rwhp in the future (bolt ons needed to help with using a more street driving friendly cam not a higher 23x duration cam) ....

as for heads here are the options ....

1-send your stock heads for cnc porting and milling (tsp or patriot might have the right price) and 918 springs with stock valves size for a +280 cfm @600 lift (400-500 porting price I think and 170 for 918 springs from texas speed) a cheap good cam is patriot 226 226 112 cam $279.50 and pushrods is $109.50 from texas speed (will depend on the cam Lobe desighn and the milling of the heads) and you know what the cam package from texas speed with the 918 springs (morecam options) is just about the same $560 .. it`s $580 (just realized that)

hint:call them about porting your heads and buying their cam package with assembling your head with the 918 springs or without assembly don`t know your installation plans.

2-contact Gunnar about their 243 bare non ported heads (been on special til 12th of january $350 don`t know how much now) and buying the tsp cam package mentioned above $580 installing them with your existing valves.

you said $1000 with parts .... if you`ll include gaskets and lube and bolts the budget will be lower and the only option I can think of is substract all what you need for installation and get the price you`re ready to pay for heads, springs, cam and pushrods then search in the forsale section or post your budget and these parts in the parts wanted section.

hope it helps.

just got this together patriot sells yellow ls6 springs 20-30 $ ! if you`ll use a mild cam with a lift in the 540-560 range with comp XE lobes the I read somewhere that some places ginds custom cams 350-360 $ .... add say 30 those springs + 110 pushrods and that`s 490-500 $ .... that`s a budget thing ... should be good but I`d personally save for the tsp package with an XER lobe cam with their 918 package if I were you.
