used stall converters
I was looking to purchase a yank 3600 stall for my ws6 but it has around 8 thousand miles. How reliable can it be? how long do these stalls last?

Used converters are only questionable because you don't know how they've been used. 8000 highway miles would imply the converter is probably like new. 8000 dragstrip miles might mean it's used up. My best advice for buying a used converter is to check with the manufacturer on how much it would cost to have it freshened up. Consider the selling price, shipping, and rebuild fee, and go from there to find out if it's worth it to you. On the other hand, if you know the source for the used converter, and have confidence, then just buy it and use it.

I'm skeptical of buying some parts used unless I know who has had them. If it's from a a buddy or a respectable member on this site, you'll probably be ok, otherwise you may end up spending more in the long run.

Go buy it if its cheap. If doubtful of its reliability have it refresh. I got a used Yank 3500 and I was going to be the 3rd owner of it. The second owner wasn't sure the Yank stall condition when he took it off but I got it refresh for $200 (new fins, reband clutches) All I have to do now is pay the second owner a track fee when we go to our local track. My $220 Yank 3500 sounds like good deal to me.

My Vig 3200 had 30,000 on it between 2 prior owners when I got it. Traded a friend of mine an RC car for it and a set of sway bars. It has never been refreshed or rebuilt and it probably has about 50,000 miles on it now. It still works flawlessly.

its a true roll of the dice... I bought a used PI converter and it lasted me about 8-9K miles.... then it took out my FLT level 5 trans... not a cheap thing to replace just 'cause I got a "deal" on a converter.... lesson learned from that one. some parts are ok to buy used. Rims, cosmetic parts, gear sets (if inspected), and a few other things. But something you cant just LOOK at and see its condition, then, no way IMO... spend a little more now and save a lot more later.

Like stated earlier, if the price is right then get it and send it to the manufactor to get refreshed. If it costs you $300 for the stall. Then, $200 for a refresh and restall. Then thats still quite lower than you would pay new. I personally like my Yank. Plus, if it does ever go out or something happens. I'd gladly pay the money to get it refreshed then fork up what I paid for it new.
