Default Swapping 4.10's for 3.73's in a 10 bolt for longevity

I am considering removing my 4.10's and sticking in a set of 3.73's to soften the blow my rearend receives on launch. I never had a problem breaking gears until I installed them. I think the larger pinion gear and increased tooth contact will help the gears last longer. I know the ideal thing would be to install a 9" but it's not in the budget right now. My present gears are chewed to **** from exploding an auburn posi last summer, so they need to be replaced anyway, so would this be a good idea? I might add... I am installing a TR224 cam, FAST 78 intake, ported TB and LTs/ORY before the season starts, so my rear is going to be even more likely to break. I just want to know if I should stay with 4.10's or not. Opinions?

There's no way I would swap to 3.73s after having 4.10s, especially if your gonna have a cam. I have been running Motives for a while and they have taken some beatings. The weak link I have found so far has been the posi. I exploded it on the 1-2 shift. What brand gears have you been running?

Might as well leave them in...going to 3.73 is not going to be a magical saviour of the 10 bolt. If it's going to break it's going to break.

Ha ha... well, that may be my problem too - been running cheapo $140 gearsets from the Auto Value store down from my house. I figured I wouldn't feel too bad breaking them if they were cheaper. Guess maybe I should try a set of good gears once and see what happens. Maybe stay away from the track until I get a rear in the car, lol.

The combination of cryo and mikronite on the 4.10s might help them survive, but the posi and axles still will grenade if you start with big clutch dumps.

A couple of sponsors, Crane Cams and Vinci, can Mikronite for you (Crane was just bought by Mikronite).

I've actually decided to go with 3.90's now for the time being. I only dump the clutch between 2500-3000 so it should be able to handle it. I'm going to avoid the track as much as I can until I get a better rearend in it.
