Default Why did my tail shaft housing crack?

I had my car on the dyno last week and a noticed a trans leak. I thought i over filled it. I put it in the air today and notice the tail shaft housing is cracked and leaking out of the cracks. Why would this happen? Is there a stronger housing i could install? Would the housing off a 95 caprice work?

Thanks

Torque arm is mounted to it. Too much vtec power bro. Get a relocation kit and mount the ta on the body. Thats what im doing.

as for the 95 case, idk.

The caprice tail will not work due to the fact it is a four bolt tail. You have 6 bolt tail. You can save a little money and get a tail for a truck if you are not using the TA mount. I can a get a tail for you if you need one. Vince

Vince pm sent. Does anyone have any ideas of the cause of breakage. I dont want to just put a new tail shaft housing on and have it break again. The d/s is properly balanced with new u-jionts. Would it be worth it to purchase a little d/s for less stress, or is that a waste of money?

Most likely it was fatigued before you changed the torque arm mount. Do you notice any driveline vibration? Also, make sure your pinion angle isn't way off.

Yes i have had vibration at +65mph. I just thought that was the nature of the uni-body torque arm. I also had the d/s balanced and pinion angle is at -2 if i know how to set it properly. Could the tail shaft housing be fatigued? I thought it was either broken or not.

dude, i've broken lots of em. dont know why either. balanced driveshaft, new u-joints, balanced tired and body mount torque arm. but, all i do is when it breaks, u use some heavy sealant on it. 1826 or 8802. its industrial stuff. but it works.

Okay breaking this tail shaft housing all the time can not be acceptable. How reliable can your car really be if you have to think about it breaking all the time. There has to be a problem here. How is it that some people have never had them break and then some break all the time. Sorry but i cant accept this. There has to be a reason.

Check the runout on your output shaft. If you've broken your shaft before you could have bent your outputshaft. This will cause a vibration and a housing to crack.Ask me......I know!

I know you haven't broken your tail housing before, but definately have the output shaft and the bushing in the back of the case checked now that you have. I broke 2 tail housings and after the first one i wiped out the bushing on the output shaft at the rear of the case which in turn ruins the case requiring the whole damn case to be replaced! I too had a crossmember mounted torque arm (changed it after the first breakage) and still broke a housing. As it turns out it was my motor mounts! They were so twisted and torn up that the engine was leaning hard to one side (really couldn't notice from the top, but from underneath....) binding up the tranny mount so bad that the metal shell that it's in twisted up! Unfortunately with neither the motor mounts or the tranny mount doing the job of absorbing the twist and vibration, the tail housing was left to take the stress, couldn't live up to the task and cracked right at the mounting flange. Fortuntely, the second time was just a hairline crack (i guess I caught it in time) and didn't damage the case. I hope this helps you out!
