Default AIR explanation

AIR - Air Injection Recirculation - Emissions controll device. Injects fresh air into the exhaust gas before the cats. Helps them heat up to reach "emissions light off" faster.

Read this in the sticky, don't know what it means. Anyone help explain? thanks

That is your AIR Pump sending 30 seconds of air into your exhaust to heat your cat up during startup. It is located right in front of the driver's side front wheel well. Just part of the emissions junk that comes on our cars.

How does it heat up the cat? Why does the cat need to be heated up?

Cats will only operate/function properly when warm/hot. That is why you can't technically be legal with a long tube header. Heat dissipates the further away from the source it gets, therefore the cat is not brought up to temperature.

All AIR does is mix fresh air into the exhaust. I am assuming that it has a property that will make it hotter than just normal EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature). Also gives you a cleaner burn...hence "emissions equipment".

The cat needs to be hot to burn up carbon, and to be able to clean up your exhaust output to be better for the environment.

Take your cats off your car, that's why we have trees!!

I guess I don't understand how a cat works, so that's basically what I'm asking. I thought it was just a filter-type device.
