Who knows about Salvage Titles (getting it changed to Rebuilt, erased, etc...)?

Who knows about Salvage Titles (getting it changed to Rebuilt, erased, etc...)?
There's a great deal on a 1998 Mercedes SLK Kompressor hardtop convertible that I am thinking about picking up for the wife...
It has a salvage title because the car was stolen, and recovered, in New York... New York is a state that automatically converts cars to a salvage title when they are stolen.
I've seen the report, nothing was wrong with the car when it was recovered other than a cracked windshield (which I got an estimate to fix for $300). Had the car checked out at a Mercedes dealership and it's in great shape.
Basically, it's a great car for half the price due to the title... I can insure a salvage title but NOT FULL COVERAGE. If I get it inspected and converted to a REBUILT title I can get full coverage...
Does anyone know how to go about doing this? How much would it cost? I REALLY wish there was some way to get the Salvage title reversed since it was just a dumb state law that tagged it as such... Anyone? Thanks!

Just trying to add up all the costs before I buy the car...
Right now we're looking at:
Tax/Tag/Registration (Varies)
Windshield ($300)
Title Conversion/Inspection (I have no clue)

I have a Salvage Title on my WS.6 that I need to go to the DMV tomorrow and hand in all the paperwork for. I know I have to do the damn brake light test but what about smog?....Do I need to re-smog the car? I'm supposed to do it in August anyways!
Oh,..and I'd like to find out about that rebuild title thing aswell!

Before you even think about buying a salvage vehicle from New York, contact your state DMV/MVA and find out if they will take a "salvage certificate" from the state of NY. Most states DO NOT! Ask me how I know.
If by chance they do, you should be able to go to your state's DMV/MVA website and see what is needed to get a clean title. Typically it's a State Police inspection (to make sure the car's not stolen, and that you have the parts that contain at least three of the original VIN numbers).
If your state does not accept a "New York Salvage Certificate" then you have to make the necessary repairs to bring the car back to roadworthy, take the car (towing only, you are not allowed to drive it) back to NY and go through their state inspection which will get you a title. You have to fill out a bunch of NY forms, send them about $300 and wait for them to tell you when your appt. is scheduled.
I bought two salvage vehicles from NY off ebay. Rather than go through the NY process I just had a shop place a lien against both vehicles and obtained new titles through the lien process. I would not suggest this as the best method as it also cost not only what the lien company charges, but then you have to pay the state taxes to obtain the title -- it was $900+ for one vehicle and $1,200+ for the other.
Good luck and hope your state accepts a NY salvage title.

I'm assuming you're in Cali? California does accept salvage from New York. California will always call it a 'salvaged vehicle' no matter if you put it back on the road. i just did one last year. feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

8tsixt and FordGirlGoneBad,
Yeah, the vehicle is already in Cali, been accepted by Cali and Carfax says was issued a Cali Salvage Title/Certificate (so I still am confused as to if it is titled)... So there's no worries of it coming from New York...
My main and only concern is being able to get it FULLY COVERED in insurance (it's for my wife and I don't want to skimp on her protection/car) and not have some ridiculously high rate because of a title...
DaGeneral, "other" sounds better than salvage
WS6 Rampage, please let me know how it all goes
Thanks for your input, keep it coming !

Every car has a title, even if it's salvaged. So the car you would get would come with a salvaged title. I don't know about insurance, just call your insurance company and ask them.

I buy salvage cars/trucks, fix them and resell them. Most states do issue titles, but NY isn't one of them. I don't believe New Jersey is either.
And, to the original poster - your insurance company shouldn't care whether or not it was previously salvaged. If it's totalled at some later date it might become an issue, but more than likely not. Also, sometimes when you get a salvage vehicle retitled there's no indication of the salvage history at all. My 2000 T/A was a salvage car -- but the title seach done in Maryland came back clear, so now it has a completely clear title. I have a truck that came back with a salvage history and that's stamped on the title, so the next owner will know it was a salvage vehicle.

Shouldn't take too long... It's 2002 Focus SE that is in MINT condition with 49,000 miles on it. Plus it has the Zetec
I even upgraded it with MSD coils, wires, Brisk plugs and a CAI

california salvaged titles are REVIVIED...not rebuilt. it will have to go through a California Highway Patrol Inspection to get it revived. But even at that point, i maybe be mistaken, but it should say revived on the title... and not salvaged... u should check out this link.. i havent read it latley so yeah just see for yourself

salvage is permanent in CA. revived yes but the salvage branding remains for life.btw highway patrol inspection only applies if the car is randomly "flagged" or if its missing a ******* emmissions/2ndary VIN label
