Your whole car will blow up, taking with it anything in a 5 mile radius.
The worse that will happen is you will get detonation. If your car pulls timing you will lose power and gas milage too.

Your car calls for high octane gas because of the high compression ratio of the engine. Higher compression ratio = greater pressure inside the cylinder = more likelihood of detonation/knock. Higher octane gas has additives to increase it's resistance to knocking. If you use lower octane fuel and it starts to knock, the engine computer will try to correct for it by adjusting the timing, which robs you of power. Basically, use premium gas.

your manual calls for 91 octane. why would you run anything less? when you run less, your car pulls timing in order to combat detonation. this means that 89 octane gives you less power and less gas mileage. i absolutely hate discussions when people are too cheap to put the proper gas in your car. they don't realize that they're paying for it anyway by using the shitty gas. if you didn't want to use premium, WHY DID YOU BUY THE CAR? i'm sorry, but these topics really **** me off. you knew when you bought it the car requires premium. pay the extra 10 cents a gallon. you'll be paying that extra 10 cents by running 89 octane due to lost fuel economy. DO WHAT THE MANUAL TELLS YOU IN THIS CASE. please. do it for your car.

Your manual says you can use 87 and above. Nothing will happen. Use your car the way YOU want to.
If you want to set it out in the yard and burn it, go right ahead. It's your choice.
Other people's problems are just that...

Pick out your specific year's manual HERE.
My 98 manual (section 6, page 3) says the following,
"If you have the 5.7L engine (VIN Code G), use premium unleaded gasoline rated at 91 octane or higher for BEST (emphasis mine) performance. You may use middle grade or regular grade gasolines, but your vehicle may not accelerate as well."
This applies up to and including 2002 MY.
That anybody's knickers get in a twist about it is not your problem.

I've used 87 octane in the T/A a few times this winter to see if there was any difference in mpg. Funny thing is, there was zero difference. The engine will only pull timing when it detects knock, and 99% of the time it's only going to detect knock if you get on it, so I doubt mpg will change unless you're in death valley in july.
It did however ping a couple of times at wot, but as far as I could tell performance wasn't any different. Heck its hard to tell when you're running blizzaks and its 5 degrees out anyway.

Maybe that's just me.

I can understand going the cheaper route with a basic daily driver or economny car, but if you've got an LS1 I would assume that premium performance would be a priority, rather than $0.10 to $0.20 savings per gallon.

(disclaimer) Don't take anything I'm about to say personally, any of you.
But I don't feel any great need to explain my actions to anyone here or to anyone else anywhere else. I'm a grown man and don't answer to anyone (except The Man, and The Mrs.) As with explaining the Conservative point of view to a Liberal, you just can't make some people see your point(s). But, in this instance I will explain some of the reasons I do this thing.
I am no longer 25 years old. I don't have to prove my manliness to everybody that pulls up next to me by either how fast I can squeal away from them or how loud or what kind of music I have. I don't NEED to have constant best performance. I'm confident in my manliness without using 91 or better AT ALL TIMES.
Sometimes I'm short of cash and it isn't quite payday. Having a mortgage, family, four cars, payments, retirement, beer, home repairs, cable bills, cell phone bills, food, clothing, beer, pizzas, and toys/tools/beer, etc. sometimes does that. If I can save lunch money, I eat lunch.
I've had my share of tickets and don't feel a need to get any more. Sure, I enjoy power and performance, but (referring to prior idea #1) I don't have to have to have it 24/7/365.
I don't bug anybody about having to have the bestest looking chick or no chick at all...nor the most expensive beer or no beer at all...nor the finest handgun there is or no handgun at all...So why do people get themselves all bent outta shape about what kind of stinkin' gas I use?
Sheesh. Take a break. Have a beer... And if you still can't get over it, BooFrickin'Hoo.
