Bad idea here?
I found a used 4L80e and am stuck between it and a rebuilt one. Here's details. Tell me what you guys would choose.
Used tranny:
$550
1 year warranty
103k miles
Rebuilt tranny:
Fresh rebuilt
Shift kit
$1400
No warranty (but shouldn't need one)
Now we'll see who stands behind their talk about the 4L80e being so tough.

I would have to say the built one if your determine to do one of the two because you dont know what the used one has been through and really 1400 dollars for a rebuilt 4l80e is not a bad price, But then on the other hand 550 for a used one isnt bad either thats close to a core pice so if you get it and it dies you will allready have the core which would even out other than the install etc. But also I would never buy a trans of any kind without a warranty because what if it dies on the second day thats 1400 just gone.

No warranty on a rebuild= no confidence in the work put into it IMO.
104K on a used one? My '98 4L80E had no reverse and major bushing wear at 61,000.
But less than $200 later it was up and running. Longer band pin, bushing kit, gasket and sealing ring kit, thats all.
It's useless to say it but if it were me I would buy the used one and rebuild it myself.
Heres what you're looking at anyways. Used 104K trans $550+300 rebuild kit= rebuilt $1400 trans= $550 profit for whoevers selling the $1400 one. What if they did what I did-take it apart and replace whats bad, more profit.
Don't get the rebuilt one.

I should clarify:
The rebuilt one will have some form of warranty. But being that it's a local guy who is a good trans builder, I'm not sure what the exact specs of the warranty are. I'm sure he'd make it right if something went wrong and it was his fault.
On the rebuild kit, where can I find that? I'm considering that used tranny and just rebuilding with upgraded parts. But where do I find those parts?

IMO one big difference in price between doing it yourself vs a local builder vs a sponsor is that a sponsor is going to replace everything and do all the upgrades to ensure that it doesn't fail.
Do it yourself, you don't have to replace all the electronics, etc as long as they work at the time and this may be what the local builder is doing also.
Depends on how much you want to mess with it and take chances I guess.
I would either do it myself, or buy from the most reputable shop you can afford.

Heck, I'm so sick of looking. I put the most faith in the local builder. But honestly, he'll take a few weeks to build it. Plus I'm looking at a lot of loot for the tranny plus a high-end converter. I'm seriously considering a Performabuilt stg2 4L60e and their 3500 stall. Any thoughts?

I think for warranty and the best peice of mind thats is your best bet, While I can say absolutly that you will not have a failure with our trans as no one else can either , I can say we stand behind what we sell absolutly no excuses if it breaks we will fix it, And we will tell you what and why it broke. And make changes if needed on our end to prevent it happening again and if its not on our end advise you of what you need to do to aviod it happening again.
thanks
thanks

Well reading the post above would convince me. If he knows what you're putting his trans in and is confident it will work, and will stand behind it if it doesn't I would go with one of those.
