Default Turbo Suggestions

Well I've been reading that a T-76 might not be the most suitable turbo for my build. Motor will either be a 388 or 427 LSX block, LS7 heads/intake. I've been hearing that T-76 won't flow quite enough in this size of a motor, especially with those heads. So what are your turbo recommendations, and why? Going on a street car, shooting for around 1000rwhp on race gas, 700+ on pump. I'm sure it'll handle more, but I don't need more for a car I just wanna cruise around in and take to the track and shootouts occassionally. Please get as detailed as you can, since I'll be taking this info, the info I've collected from research, and go pick the brain of my fabricator and a couple local tuners.

Also, which intercooler would you recommend? I'd like to stay air to air to keep it as simple as possible. Thanks for the input!

That is correct, you will need an 85mm-88mm T6 framed unit. S88 or our Garrett T6 88.

Response sent...the S88 and GT88M are probably the two best in price and physical size. The GT88M is a new piece we have been working on to get a new comp wheel. Its now done and ready for production. Makes close to the power of a S88, but not quite the turbine wheel flow.

I'd focus on 88mm large frame turbos. I have a GT47-88 T6. It weighs about 65 lbs.

Bell seems to be making some nice intercoolers. I believe Stenod carries them.

That seems to be the general consensus here. I'm trying to get some dimensions on the GT47-88 and an S88 to compare the two. Should have plenty of room in this car, but having a huge intercooler and a huge turbo might make it tricky. Good thing about 3rd gens is they have two huge opens areas behind the headlights once you relocate the battery and washer/coolant tanks. Hoping that leaves enough room for the turbo, piping, etc, w/out having to make my own core support. No biggie if we have to though, just like to avoid it if possible.

John I think I met you a few years ago at the Thunder Shootout. I'm not sure if you remember Raging Motorsports or not, but I was a builder there. I got out before it went down thank goodness, but I was there filming, in the back of 9ball's truck.

Hey thanks for the pics. So around 15" in all measurements, maybe a hair less. That's good to know. Thanks for the info!

Another question for the 88 users, how does it drive on the street? This car will mainly be driven around town and cruised and just had fun with. Is the 88 a dog on the street? When do you start to spool and by what rpm is full boost? Mine will a 6 speed car so I won't be on a big converter and trans brake or anything.

Roughly 15x15x13, though you can call up the turbo companies and get them to measure any unit.

My car is laggy down low.

That's what I said! Great minds think alike I guess. . . BTW, how big is the S88? Didn't I see somewhere that it's about the same physical size as a GT42?

I'm not sure about the GT42, but from what I'm told and what I've seen, the GT47-88 is larger than the S88 or PT88

Yes the S88 is a same size as the GT42. Smaller in size but packs a HUGE punch.

Just for everyone's info . . . what are the connection sizes on the S88? Compressor inlet and outlet? Turbine outlet? Can it be had in T4?

Thanks,
Mike

The new cover is 5.5" and 3" outlet. Turbine with T4 outlet is 4". Also we can build them with T4's up to 80mm as well. T4's tend to choke with much larger compressor wheel then it, unless you do a cheater T4/T6 flange, but most classes don't allow them.

I agree with going T6 and at least an 88mm.

I'm just concerned about the lag around the street with an 88mm turbo. I'd like to be in boost by 4000rpm since this will be a street car. Is there a turbo in between, like the 80, that won't choke the engine and make good power while still spooling fairly quick?

with that many cubes lag time wont be a big issue
i have a 346cubed PTE-88mm (T4) and am seeing 12psi at around 3700rpm
with a 388-427 i dont think you whine to much, as it would also make power off the engine without boost too.
