This is NOT a GM option. None of them came that way off the assembly line.

VIN etching on the glass is a dealer provided service (at extra charge) at the time you buy the car. Supposed to be a theft deterent.

i cant understand why someone would want there vin on there windows..you people do know that its very easy to break into your car if you have the vin number..

it is not a factory option, dealers put it on as a dealer option (as y'all have already said.) i have put a couple thousand of those on cars when working for a dealership. the reason it is a "theft deterrent" is because (in theory) windows are one of the most expensive items for car theifs to replace, and if one window is broken, they will have to replace them all so as to not have only one with out the etch. i think that it doesnt make sense personally, but that is the logic behind it.

My understanding is that the idea is to keep theives from being able to part out the glass, thus making the car a less attractive target to steal.

There are still more valuable items on most of our cars than the glass and they have only the GM part number it that on them. I personally think that glass etching is a waste of money option. But to each their own.

Thats what I was thinking... geez. I don't want my VIN plastered all over my car for any thief to see. :judge:

1) Get VIN #
2) Go to dealer, get keys made
3) Enjoy your new F-body

I don't know of any dealer in my area that will cut keys based on the VIN alone. They require proof of ownership and photo ID. Anything less would be stupid on their part.

A dealer cutting keys with only the VIN would be shooting themselves in the foot:

1) Thief sees car on dealer's lot that he likes.
2) Thief takes VIN number off car's dash, window sticker, or dealer's website.
3) Thief gets keys made at the parts department.
4) Thief enjoys new ride, free of charge.

If they want your VIN, they're gonna get it, window etching or not. There are many ways to get a car's VIN even if you can't see it on the car, so long as you know where to look. It's pretty scary really.

I know, I was exaggerating lol. But still, I know people that cover up the VIN on the dash as it is for safety. Why add it to more visible locations?

I agree 100%. :) No point in making the VIN any more obvious than it already is.

All I meant was, for someone that knows what they're doing, there are some pretty easy ways to get the VIN even if you cover it on the dash. ;)
