Default can my car handle better than a vette?

hey guys i know i am comparing apples and oranges here but i just drove a C5 6 speed vette today. the salesman let me open it up on the highway and the car was so smooth and easy to control up to 130.... my camaro has stock suspension so i know not to expect much out of it but im curious if my car with the suspension upgrades will handle as well as the vette at high speeds. especially considering that the vette has better weight distribution and better aerodynamics and obviously cost would be a consideration... looking at some basic suspension upgrades

Well you have a straight axle in the back, the vette is independent... I don't know much about suspension but that's a difference that is probably pretty hard to overcome.

Yes, a properly suspended F-car can hang and out run a stock C5. It's not as hard as you might think.

This has been debated numerous times. A search will yeild a ton of opinion.

It will be tough to beat a c5 though. If you are referring to solo2 speeds, the 2007 PAX for SS is .848 for the c5 and the Camaro in ESP is still only .834. The scca classification isn't perfect but it gives you an idea of what cars should compete with others. The C5 is a highly competitive car in its classes.

With the same driver, I think a stock C5 would be faster than the fbody even in street prepared. Trying to beat a Vette at least as far as autox goes, you shouldn't worry about it since it's built much better for handling than the fbody is.

You are comparing apples and oranges. And just how do you quantify things like "better than a Corvette" anyway? And which Vette? And what do you consider handling (that varies).

Better to assess what you dislike about the way your car drives instead, and attack the problem that way. Shocks being item #1 on the upgrade list for stability, tire compliance and slower roll and pitch generation. It'll ride less harshly too. And when I say shocks, I mean appropriate dampers, not any shocks at all.

General answers - stock for stock and upgrade for upgrade, the Vette will always be better. However, dollar for dollar, the F-body will be better.

What I mean is, if you add $500 shocks to both cars, the Vette will stay better. However, if you take the $10k price difference in the 2 cars and spend $10k in upgrades on the F-body, the F-bod will be better.

FYI, my Trans Am has bolt-on suspension and intake/exhaust, plus race tires. I can beat a stock 2007 Z06 on the local road course.

i completely agree.... although i would say you can outrun vettes primarily because of tires. race tires on even a stock f-body would improve times tremendously i'm sure....

Remember, he is basically asking if he can make his F-Car handle as well as the stock C5 he test drove.

It's a no-brainer ... $2K worth of suspension goodies will hang and even embarrass an unsuspecting Vette owner.

On a long road course, its a different story. Power comes in pretty handy and if you throw 10k into many different cars you can make them beat a stock vette.

Shocks, he need to start with better shocks. Notice he was impressed by the ease with which the car drove, and the crap stock shocks (or cheap-*** replacements) for F-cars don't offer very good stability. Hence the reason whenever possible they are what we start with....

I'd love to be able and go back to test my first autox Camaro setup just to feel the difference from now and back then. My first setup was all stock except for subframe connectors, 35mm ST front swaybar, and 21mm BMR rear swaybar. When you start out, you don't know what a car should feel like and handle. I know my current setup feels really good, but compared to my old setup I have faint memories of.

If I can only get my times down now. Just have to work on that!

Look, a set of Koni SAs and a Stranobar on a lowly F-Body and I would have been 2nd in ASP ahead of two Corvettes on Sunday.
