Default How long can I go without a tune? & patriot spings question

I am about to install a TR230 cam 230/224 .575/.563 111 lsa in my 98 TA. My question is how long should i go before i get it tuned? The car is not my dd but I would like to drive it some. I plan on getting it dyno tuned this summer, probly not until july because of $. should I not drive it until the tune or hold out to put it in? Also can patriot gold valve springs be used with factory retainers, seats, and locks or do i need the patriot ones? Thanks for any help guys.

NO! You certainly need the retainers, locks, and seats for the dual coil springs. Your beehive components will not come close to working any.

As for the tune, it will be slightly drivable. With the AC on it will die at redlights and stopsigns. Drilling out the throttle body hole will help some, but it will still die at stops and will buck going through parking lots at slow speeds. A tune will fix all these issues.

the tune issue varies obviously. when i did my cam swap i was told NOT to drive my car because it could be running so rich it could wash the rings (and i'm guessing not seat as well anymore). my cam is a little bigger though. i think you can also possibly foul your o2 sensors...

I could see killing the oxygen sensors, but I really doubt you'd wash rings. I think you'd stand a better chance of having a lean spot and popping a piston.

I agree on the springs, don't do it. Get the proper parts. As for the tune, I personally wouldn't drive it. You won't know what is going on until something goes wrong unless you have a scanner. Why not just wait to do the installation until you have the correct parts and the money for the tune.

dont go cheap on springs, get all that is recommended for them springs. Patriot gold springs can be purchased with all that you'll need for good price. as for tune, can be iffy. something you need to decide with all this info we are giving you. I did a H/C swap, 231/237 112 LSA. and drove mine for about occasionally, waited almost two months for dynotune but, I did not run it hard or wot. did get fustrated at times, engine would idle realy ruffing and when stopping at a light/stop sign I would slighty tap on gas peddle to keep it from dieing. hope this helps some...

as for drilling hole on tb plate I wouldn't do it, can make tunning difficult when that times arrives. I would adj. idle higher till then.. course all this is a suggestion and my experience.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna put the cam in and drive it a little before the tune. It's only gonna be about 3 weeks after the install until I get it tuned and it's not my dd. I probly will put less than 100 miles on it and I don't plan on any wot. I'm also gonna go with comp 918 spings, comp chromemoly pushrods, double roller chain, and a ported ls6 oil pump. Thanks again for the advice.

It will be *okay* to drive without the tune but it won't be any fun. And getting your car tuned is freaking sweet... you'll be gaining all sorts of power/torque and if the tuner is good your powerband will just feel dead on.

Yes getting will net you more HP/TQ generally a good amount too, but not just the power the ability to use it well.

I actually drove around an Untuned Trex car for about a month as well, it was fine. Granted it probably only got 300-500 miles driven in that state. Im sure it toasted the 02's, but they weren't used anyways once it was tuned
