Stuck in 4th
So I was on my way home yesterday on the freeway driving in traffic, just putting along basically. Getting up to speed I did a normal 3-4 shift and held my speed. Seeing traffic slowing ahead, I began to slow, push the clutch pedal down and tried to take it out of 4th and it wasnt going anywhere . Drove it home in 4th gear, parked it and let it sit for a while and cool off. I went out later that night and drove it down the street and it came out of 4th. Now I know I have some sort of problem and I know this problem has been posted up here by many others, many of times. My question is, now that its out of 4th, what do I do? I'm afraid it needs a rebuild, but can I drive it in 1-3 5-6 for a while or are there some parts getting tossed around in there? I just bought a 9", torque arm, and everything to go with it and I'd hate to have to pay for a transmission rebuild right now as well. So what would you do in my situation and how bad is the transmission?

Sounds like the synchro is going south, like the synchro tab is sliding out of the blocking ring locking it in 4th gear. If that is the case it is time for a rebuild.
Also you can try swapping the tranny fluid and see if that helps...
Good luck.

Driving it today I got brave enough to shift it into 4th gear and it felt completely normal. Was this just a freak accident or is it just a ticking time bomb? It really felt 100% normal driving it, but I do not know what is wrong with it. Somebody give me some advice

Time bomb! Mine was getting stuck, then it came back out for a few hours more of driving, then it got stuck again. You hae have broken your 3rd slider keys. 4th gear is just a locked input and output shaft.

I also fried my needle bearings from it being stuck.

hmm alright well the clutch is being replaced, so I'm going to have the trans looked at while its out. I already put a call into t56rebuilds. There is only 40,000 miles on the trans, what am I going to have to replace? About how much should I expect to spend?

Well mine just did this today!
I was also driving along just like normal came to a light and it got stuck in 4th, it had done it b4 so I just pumped the clutch like usual and tried again but still stuck. Finally I let it coast to a gas station and made it take off in 4th, and it losend up a bit and it went into 2nd so I drove it home in 2nd (2-3 miles). I took it out of gear to see if maybe the pressure had gone away but nope, now it wont go into any gear. It feels like it stuck between gears and has too much pressure.
My 3rd gear syncro went out a little while back, so Im guessing I took to long to fix it and I fried the whole tranny huh?
Please I need help asap!!!

I've been researching, and it looks like it isnt TOO difficult to rebuild the trans on my own as there are some great manuals/writeups on how to do it. I might just do it
