If it was WOT under full load and sounds like rocks tapping the car, that was probably detonation...especially if you didn't hear it any other time. Did you notice a loss in power. If it's light detonation you may not feel it, but you can still hear the light popping sound.

if its detonation, its a very serious problem. ive never heard a car have it that loud, unless it was getting ready to blow.
is it coming out of the tail pipe? the noise i mean. and is the car running rich? black smoke?
having detonation on a N/A car isnt as bad as a FI car. this could turn into something you dont want. check fuel pressure, and short and long term fuel trims, unless you have a wide band. then thats easy

that sounds more like detonation then anything. if there was black smoke i would just say it was running rich. the popping from a rich car is cause by unburned fuel hitting the open air. which sometimes cause's a flame. but if your hearing the popping out of the exhaust and no smoke at all. that doesnt sound good.is there anyway you can get this thing on a dyno with wide bands?

the exhaust is popping when you let off the gas? or is it under acceleration?
if its popping when you let off the gas then thats unburnt fuel.
if its popping under acceleration i would lean towards knock.
have you scaled back your timing tables at the higher rpms?

whos tuning this car? if they have anytype of good equipment, they'll have a wideband 02 sensor, and if that isnt there you can still see if its going on the lean side with your stock narrow bands.
that should be an easy way to tell something

I am the one tuning SVT BAIT's Corvette. I use HPTuners Pro with an AEM Wideband incorporated into the scanner.
We sorted this out. It was not knock (detonation), it started running rich (11.5 dropping to 10.5) when it started popping. Fuel pressure dropped from 60 to 50. I couldn't make a clean pass and did not want to endanger the engine. The knock sensors were at factory settings, even burst knock. Timing was at 13 degrees while commanding 11.7. We were about 2% rich throughout the fuel table, except when the popping arose. It was more like a muffled thud, versus a popping (ping). I surmized that there was extra fuel in the chambers, effectively putting out the spark, causing the misfire/popping (too much pressure in the chambers for the spark). I leaned it out to run around 12.0-11.9 and I was able to finally run 15-16 degrees of timing, and make a full pass. SVT BAIT is very happy with the results.

nice, i was wondering what was going on. cause he never said anything about widebands, and i was just thinking he had some friend down the street tuning his blown c5 on narrow bands.lol
nice job figuring out the problem.
