Default Stainless Steel AND Coated Headers ??

I was reading in GMHTP about their Z06 project using SLP headers. They said that SLP uses SS and Jet-Hot coating. Here's the description from their website:

SLP LS1/LS6 TUNED-LENGTH LONG-TUBE HEADERS:
Reduce 1/4-mile ETs by up to 4 tenths of a second and increase trap speeds by as much as 4 mph.

Offer easy, bolt-on installation.

Cost significantly less than competing C5 headers.

Are compatible with all factory emissions equipment.

Feature .055" wall-thickness 409 stainless steel tubing to ensure long life.

Are mandrel bent to maximize flow.

Use Jet-Hot's polished aluminum-ceramic thermal barrier coating (interior and exterior surfaces) to keep heat in, exhaust velocity up, and under-hood temperatures down.

Are covered by our Performance Guarantee and Lifetime Limited Warranty.

I've never heard of doing both SS and coating on headers. I always thought it was one or the other.. Is this something that is worth getting done with other SS headers (like QTP)?

Thanks..

The SLP headers are a lower grade SS if I remember correctly. I don't think you want to coat SS as a general rule. I believe when you do coat it - it is best to coat only the outsides, but again I'm not 100% sure on that. Try giving Nick at Kooks headers a call -- he can answer your questions about that.

The 409 Stainless that SLP uses on there headers is inferior to 304 Stainless

304 is the type of stainless that can be polished and will never show signs of rust like the 409. Of course, 409 is still better than the cold rolled steel the majority of headers are made from.

Thanks Guys.. You just answered my next question.. I was searching online to figure out what the difference between 304 and 409 SS were.

Looks like if using 304 SS then no need to coat.. Thanks!

I think you will find that a magnet will stick to the stock exhaust parts advertised as SS. I think they are constructed from 409. 409 will have surface rust after time, but it has a much higher lifetime than mild steel.

Also note SS in general has a lower thermal conductivity than other steels, and will still benefit from being a ceramic coating.

Can 304 SS be either coated to give it that chrome look or would it be better off polished.

Heres some info about 409 steel:

Lately Ive been interested in buying some headers and did some research. IMO 304 SS is the best choice for longterm use. The only 304 SS header that im aware of is QTPs. Is there any other?

Leave the 304 alone
