Z28 and Z28 SS. What's the difference.
what gives the ss more horses than the Z28. Don't they have the same engine. I have the 02 Z28 Camaro. Just wanted to know what's different besides the look.

There is no real difference. It's all in the marketing. Z28 and SS will dyno the same and run the same ETs year for year and trans type for trans type.

thanks for the quick reply. I love the ss hood and wing. Does the ss hood really have an affect on horsepower. Seems like it would have more of an affect on getting cooler air into the engine. Also what does the ls1 camaro dyno?

Difference is all in appearance unless you get other options (SLP) like some people mentioned. I've also heard that the SS has stiffer suspension than the Z28 ?? Not 100% on that. The stock Z28 hood in my opinion makes the front end way too plain for the high performance model. The stock hood looks like one of those chrysler concorde things .. you can make it look alright with some stripes though.
I gotta Z28 with the SS hood -- its RAM AIR through the scoop and that prolly adds a little bit and helps with the cooling I think after 30-40 MPH ..

thanks ls1 powerhouse02. From a ls1 owner to another. What bolt ons do you'll recommended. As of know all i have installed is the flowmaster cat back exhaust. Took it to the track and ran a 13.5 at 104 mph. Now i'm about to install a hypertech 160 degree thermostat, b&m transpak shift improver, bosch platinum 2 plugs and msd ignition wires and a hypertech power programmer lll on the way.

I have a used working hypertech 160 deg thermo, PM me if you are interested. My advice everytime you decide on a mod search this forum and see what the consensus is. That is the best way not to waste money.
The hypertech programmer most will say is a waste of money and most say the flowmaster doesn't flow so well. Plugs most go with NGK TR55. Lid, pacesetter headers, ported tb, underdrive pulley are best band for the buck IMO to start with.
I'm not auto but a stall is prob the biggest thing you can do to improve track times.

The SS is mainly an appearance and handling package (the suspension components changed over the years), but will hold its value much better than the Z28.

I respect what your saying man but I have to disagree.There are many people who are into the whole history,numbers matching thing.Its just a little more special (to people who care) to have an actual SS in my opinion.And is well worth the price difference to the people who are big time Camaro fans.
Then there are people who are racing/HP purists and live to race.I can repsect that as well.They look at the SS and think that it should be much faster than a Z28,when they find out that it isn't,it becomes a waste of money in thier eyes.
I also notice that the 2nd of the two types of owners tend to jump to whatever they can afford and is faster.As in when finances allow,they usually jump to the next step in performance,a Corvette or better for instance.
Not saying that is a wrong thing but,it does show me that the 1st type of owner is usually a bigger fan of the Camaro and is usually the guy (or girl) that just HAD to fork over the extra cash to get a numbers matching SS.
I say its:
SS=Camaro fans
Z28=A racer's Camaro
Just my opinion...

Z28s have a history that lasts decades; while SS is a namplate that has come and gone over the years for the Camaro. Z28 was the top dog Camaro for many, many years before SS came back. Z28 is a nameplate that is reserved for ONLY the Camaro, while SS has been used on dozens of Chevys over the last 40+ years. SS designation has it's own history in the pages of Chevy, but Z28 has a history that's strictly about the Camaro.
IMO, I do not see the SS as anything more special than a Z28. I'm not in the hobby to race as much as I am an F-body fan. I'm more impressed by condition than by the nameplate, and that's why I bought my Z28. Truth is, I would have liked an SS all the same, as I don't find either boring nor do I think one is 'better' than the other.
To assume that all Z28 owners are more about racing than their love of Camaros (or F-bodies in general) is wrong.
