Pinging with 91 octane...
I live in Cali so all we have is 91 octane. Anyways I just got the car a week or so ago and lately I've been hearing it ping a tad from 4000-6000 rpms. The only mods done are a K&N filter and I cut the exhaust off at the muffler. It's probably about 80* outside too. Is this normal? I dont want to have to add octane booster to my gas every time, that'd be annoying. Would a mail order tune get rid of the pinging? I know these run rich from the factory, and mine smells rich too...

If you have high miles you may have bad O2's, plugged up cats, is your SES light on? If so go get the codes read. If no codes I'd look at simple stuff, spark plugs, wires, cause the computer should pull timing if you are getting knock, but you shouldn't on 91.

I thought my car was pinging, sounded like your deal, only sometimes when it was hot out. It turned out to be a loose O2 sensor rattling on the exhaust. Tighted it up and it went away.

SEAFOAM YOUR CAR
seafoaming your car will be the best thing you can do to get rid of pinging. most cases of pinging are due to carbon buildup inside the motor. doing the 3-step seafoaming process will help clean out your fuel lines/injectors/crankcase/top end of your motor and can dramatically reduce pinging, and in many cases get rid of all the pinging.
if your car still pings after a seafoam treatment, consider new plugs, wires and O2 sensors.

93 octane is common most other places.
But if your car is mostly stock,it should burn 91 just fine..If it doesn't, do what Mr Taco said to do.

I had the same problem with my SS after moving to SoCal, new plugs and wires took care of the problem. Running it on 93/94 gave me no pinging so I was a bit suprised when it pinged on 91. 10K later and I still have no pinging, my old plugs and wires were the originals with 48K on them so they were a bit worn.
I'd try to Seafoam it first and then give plugs/wires a shot.
