Default Lookin' 4 a cam, need some help

Sup, my specs are in my sig. I'm looking to get a new cam and know little about what size is right and whatnot. Heard lots about the T-Rex cam, i hear alot about 224's, and the MS4. But i'm still not sure.

A few other questions:

- Should i be fine w/ buying the cam alone? Or will i need pushrods, rockers, and all that crap?

- Installation myself or pay someone? I have a friend who used to do cam swaps on older cars (like 60's and 70's old), i assume the concept is the same. I would just have to go to a professional for all the electronic stuff and tunes.

- If i choose installation by professional, what am i looking at cost wise?

- When it's all said and done, how empty will my wallet be if i'm sticking around a $400 budget ($500 VERY max, i'd prefer the $300-$350 range if possible). This is assuming i do it myself.

Thank you.

Well, your gonna need new springs and pushrods. I woud suggest a cam kit from TSP or Thunder or any of the other sponsors on here. They run in the range of $700, not to metion you will need a tune definatley with a bigger cam and reccommended with a smaller cam. It may run without a tune but not the best. Installs on a cam can run anywhere from $400 to around $1200 (performance shop). I had my cam installed by a couple of local guys on this site for $400 and they did a hell of a job. Hope this helps.

Is your car a d/d? if so you might look @ a less radical cam than a MS4. The 224, 228, Torquer 2, are some of the more popular from TSP, the G5x1,2,3's are popular LG cams, those are just to name a few out of the thousands of cam choices for LSx cars that I have seen the d/d's tend to favor. It's all personal preference.

You can give Futral a call and see what Allan would reccommend. By no means do I consider myself an expert so don't wanna give you any wrong suggestions other than to call someone who specializes in it.

So does size really matter when we're talking cams? I'd prefer the majority opinion for my d/d:

224 or bigger?

how old are you? Reason i ask is, i have the torquer 2, anad it's a good daily driver, but it's the very edge in my personal opinion for a daily river, if you want very easy to manage, i say 224, if you don't mind a little toying to get an idle, and a little finessing to stop surgin before tune, then go for the torquer, but even without a tune, the 224 is very suttle on problematic issues, and still adds great power.

19? Yeah, you won't mind, you should go torquer, or give vengeance racing a call down by atlanta, they are great at tuning, and have the vindicator camshaft that can be tuned to drive great, adn make well over 400 to the wheels. www.vengeancerd.com

Shoot man, i'd prefer a tune here in my home city of Memphis somewhere (or near Atlanta when i go back to college).

So what do you think, v2 or v3? What about springs and crap?

I'd recommend talking to Ron @ Vengeance or Patrick G. Those guys are experts and they'll suggest something specific based on your setup and goals.

I also can't speak highly enough about the tune Mike @ Vengeance did on mine. I have a fairly big cam and drivability is great.

Aight, i sent them an email. Hopin' they'll give me a helping hand.

As for now, would you recommend my going through w/ my decision of a cam w/ a budget of around $700 (all said and done)? Not sayin' i'm gonna buy it right now, i just need to wise about this decision, as well as careful.

Yes, size matters with cams, a whole lot. All the cams you listed have very different valve events and a 224 and a trex/ms4 are WORLDS apart. A 224 is a great all around cam. Off idle torque, good street manners, slight lope. A Trex and MS4 are race cams that people put up with on the street. To make max power with those you are going to need to spin up to 7000 rpm's. Unless your car is a 01-02 or has upgraded rod bolts, don't even consider these or you'll be pulling the motor for a spun rod bearing not too far down the road.

My personal suggestion would be a 228 symetrical on XE-R lobes with a 112 split, 2 degrees advanced. You are young enough to live with that, and you will only have to raise your shift points to around 6300. You will need springs and pushrods with this, as well as any other cam you really want to consider.

He's 2 site sponsors that will take care of you. Just give them a call and tell them what you want. I worked with Geoff at Thunder to get my custom grind spec'd out.

if you are gonna go cam only i would stay rather mild cause big cams dont do much without heads and better intake set-ups, i would say somewhere in the 218 to 228 range with the stock heads

So a comp 228 wouldn't be too much? Even w/ a stock tune (at least until i go back to Atlanta to get a quality tune)?
