Default just took apart my first t56...wow PICS!!!!!!

so i work at a dealership in town where i live. and ive never seen anything like this before...ls2 gto

customer said it would not go into 1st gear.

well upon inspection found a big hole in the bellhousing. and once i pulled the tranny i found the clutch had come apart. messed up the starter the bellhousing and what not.

took apart the t56 and found 1st gear to be practically welded to the mainshaft. and several of the synchros, blockers and keys broken... o and i have pictures that i will post up later.

needless to say its going to be expensive. and just out of curiousity does any aftermarket company make rebuild kits?

ryan

no fluid in the tranny? That would explain the gear being "welded"

here is the customers story.....

came up to a red light. downshifted a few times. like 6 down to 3. the red light turned to green so he laid into it in 3rd. got past the light and then booom!!!! the car lifted up and it stopped moving. said he couldnt get it into 1st gear anymore and drove it to the dealer...

so here is my theory... tranny locked up in 1st some how. and because that locked up the engine kept reving out and the weakest link broke...the clutch. but if your in 3rd how does 1st break? unless it was accidently put into first?

Two gears must have been engaged simultaneously so the original failure might have been the shift linkage. Or, if the first-gear needle bearings failed and jammed the gear to the mainshaft, it would cause lockup if the trans was not in first or neutral. Interesting - thanks for the pictures.

I highly doubt the dealer paying for something like that, they would just say you are "hot rodding" it and give you the shaft... literally lol you know these stealerships +1 on some awesome carnage though!

As ususal, the dealer was not told the whole story. That 1st damage is an overspeed result and the oversped clutch is the proof. This is a simple case of operator error. He got the 1st speed gear he asked for at a very inappropriate speed. That dealer is way too easy.
