Default Ok, this is probably a dumb *** idea, but i have a thought on lowering IAT

What would happen if one were to take the AC ducts that lead to the cabin vents and redirect them into the Air intake? Your car would be sucking up plenty of 60 degree air. Running the AC drains what, 15hp or so? Well, i would bet you gain more then enough hp from the cold IAT's to make up for that lost 15hp running the AC compressor.

Anyone have a thought, or even wanna give it a try?

I don't think it blows out as much as the engine is sucking in.

If you can find a way to get the high pressure air back out from under the hood that comes in and get trapped, as a result of air entering through the area under the front of the car, I'll bet that your inlet air temps would drop quite a bit more than by the way you are thinking of. Bob

The obvious way to do it, would be to use an AC core for your chargecooler.

But its been done, and HP required to drive it, and pretty sure it exceeds any gains over conventional setups....

Not a new idea by any means.

your A/C fan couldn't produce enough cool air to feed an engine.

Not to mention the PCM shuts the AC off at about 4k RPM and 100% TPS.

If you want real low IAT just build a sheet metal box around your intake and throw some dry ice in it. That should work better than any thing dollar for dollar

Would that be equal to big hood scoop that pushes cold air in that will displace the under hood hot air.

Or would a pipe run from the firewall to the back of the car help produce enough suction pressure to empty that trapped air.

I'm getting crazy about some ideas.

Before they discontinued it, Ford was working on a design in the Lightning that used the AC to cool down the air-water intercooler coolant over several minutes that would allow a cooler intake charge for a short burst of extra power (roughly 15 seconds, enough for a quarter mile run). Trying to cool the air intake charge directly though, real time... a car AC just doesn't have the capacity for something like that.

This thread covered this topic about using the AC as an intercooler a while ago:

Generally spilled water from the A/C system is a no no at the track even if it would work.

i still think someone could figure out a way to use the AC to their benefit. Perhaps using a larger compressor. Even if the AC couldnt supply enough air to the intake, it would provide a percentage, and that percentage would be coming in at 50 degrees or so
