Default Can the HotCam pass the sniffer test?

If tuned will it pass emissions via the tail pipe? Dave at canadian performance is doubting it ( no offence to Dave ).
Thanks

the TR 224/224 .581/.582 on a 114lsa can do it, and the hotcam is a lot smaller so i dont see why not

Most sniffer tests are being discontinued in favor of a computer diagnostic (No idiot lights - you pass).

My cam did pass the sniffer a couple of times but NY went to the diagnostic a few years back.

Try putting a C-note next to the exhaust.

That cam does not look too hot.

I would go for it. One other thing. Before the test, add 4 or 5 ounces of Acetone to a full tank of fuel. Drive around until empty, fill up again and also use Acetone for the sniffer.

This greatly reduces ommisions, does not damage any parts. I've used it for years. Acetone is the active ingredant in some fuel additives.

Acetone can be purchased at Home Depo for $6 USD per can.

as long as you have cats and all the smog equipment you will not have a problem at all.

Well, maybe. In the year before they did away with the sniffer in Weschester NY, the emmissions test was made significantly more diffucult for existing old cars. I did not think it would be koser to change the test for an existing car that was several years old, but they did it!

Consequently, that year I had a diffucult time having to go back several times before it finally passed.

So you should try to determine what the passing test amounts will be in Canada and how difficult it will be before you proceed. The sniffer is usually three gasses and you must pass all three at the same time.

Your proposed cam is not big so I suspect it will pass easily. Make sure you keep all the other emissions stuff on the car including cats, crankcase vacume, etc.

It also helps if the test is conducted by a gas station and not a government agency; those guys are tough!

One other suggestion. DON'T try LT headers before the sniff test as the cats are moved way back and they don't get very hot causing increased emmisions.

Obviously, a hot ignition system (new wires, plugs) and clean compustion chambers help.

Use the acetone gas treatment first.

The car has LT's and all the emission and cats are in place. It barely passed untuned. I have the last test sheet and Ill scan it and post it.

The hotcam has more overlap @ .05 and slower ramps than the TR 224/224 114 so it will run dirtier. zero overlap cams can be made to pass with a decent tune.

A higher idle speed helps reduce emissions. I'd bump it to 1000 or 1050 rpm for the test and put it back afterwards.

It's all about overlap.

It can be done with some extensive tuning...even in California. Check Norcal ls1.com. I think it was mysticz that passed. This was with stock cats. It was on the ragged edge.
