Default Has anyone ever pulled the motor out of the top?

The service manual says to pull the motor & tranny out from the bottom. I did this using a friends shop back in 2001, but now I am 200 miles from that shop with a broken motor.

Since I do not have a car lift at home,,, its best for me to do it the old method. Can it be pulled out the top?

i've seen a bunch of people on here who have done it. there is even a good writeup on this site which i would find if the search was working. there's also a good writeup of someone dropping it from the bottom using a cherry picker to hoist the front of the car up. that way looked the easiest. said it only took a few hours. good luck either way.

A friend of mine and i did it on my car. Involved taking the front bumper cover off and such, but surprisingly wasnt that hard. Course we stripped down the motor before pulling it out like the heads and intake but we had all those on when we put it back in.

I prefer to do it out the bottom using just jacks but this past time I took it and the tranny out the top. I had the heads/intake off though. Didn't need to pull the bumper cover. I used the qtp lift plate as well. Without it I couldn't get my hoist close enough the lift the motor evenly.

Thank you for the replies.

I have removed the intake, and will be removing the heads (mainly to inspect the engine for internal damage).

take it out the bottom

if you got the cherry picker then why not...it totally works and you dont have to rip the motor apart, fight to get the trans off under the car...you just unbolt and raise (not really that easy but you get the picture)

out the bottom i've heard is much easier but out the top isn't that bad, especially if someone is helping you.i had alittle trouble with the cherrypicker arm hitting my cowl but i just shortened the chain some .you will be fine either way.

I took mine out the top. Bottom i'm sure is easier but it wasn't as hard as most people make it out to be. Took all accessories off, balancer, intake and dropped transmission and it was easy.

Not sure what i am going to do yet, I hate the search on this board. Never seems to work. I would like to take it out of the bottom, its interesting on how some of you are doing this. With a cherry picker, or jack stands yet really has me thinking. Have heard of this before but would like to see it.

You guys have any links of better yet some pic's? I don't want to take the heads and intake off because its a low milleage great running motor and want to leave it complete. I have a forged one to drop in already. So the bottom would probably be best, but alot say its still pretty easy from the top. Hmmmmmm?

Havent pulled the motor from the bottom but twice from the top. You dont have to pull the heads off to come out the top. you will have to pull the intake though. It really isnt that hard.

I prefer out of the bottom. I can get a motor and trans out from the bottom in under three hours with jack stands and a engine hoist.
