Default Oil pressure gauge is screwed up!?!?

Well, on my way to school this morning my car decided to scare the **** out of me. I am driving along and did the casual check of the gauges and found my oil pressure gauge all the way to the right sitting about where the 120 mark would be. As I freaked out, I pulled the car over and shut it off just to find that bar would not go below 80 psi even with it completely off. Now I know it is just something minor but how do I go about fixing this? Is this the gauge or the sending unit or what?s Any input is much appreciated.

probably the sending unit. It's a pain to change also...

Are there any write ups on this? And how much do they usually run?

you can get it at autozone for around $40 and you have to pull your manifold off to change it out . . . don't forget to replace those gaskets while your manifold is off

Mine is not right either. At start up it sits at 60 and upon driving if getting on it it's at about 100+. At idle sits at 50 then is always at 60. When we doing the cam swap this weekend we're installing an oil pressure and oil temp gauge so we'll be installing a new sending unit. Hope this fixes it because I believe I have the same problem as you...nothing wrong with the car...just the sending unit.

its on the back of the block just pull the intake and you should be able to get to it pretty easily. they are somewhat common to go .

Is it directly behind the intake manifold?

Off topic. My left turn signal wont click anymore, so I checked the bulbs but they all seem fine. What is the problem with this?

I have never taken the manifold off before. How long should this job take to finish? And is there anything I should change while I am back there?

probbly fiqure on an hour if its your first time. very straight forward. the intake gaskets are reuseable but if they've been on there a while couldnt hurt to change them .

The only thing keeps confusing me is that when I shut the car off the gauge stays at about 80. I would figure even if the sending unit was screwed up wouldnt it drop back to zero once the car was shut off?

nope pretty much stays were it is when you shut the car off then starts reading again when you start the car if you turn the key just on it "should" go to zero but with a bad sender who knows what it will actully read

No. A voltage of 0 will peg the meter. A voltage of 5 will put the meter at 0psi. So, when you shut the car off, the car will still read the voltage of oil pressure, which is 0.

so with 0 voltage the gauge will peg car off = 0 voltage right?
never seen one car peg the gauge when you shut the car off

Well, what I really wanted to know is if I could be certain that it is my sending unit and not something else.

I just had my intake manifold taken off a week or two ago. Hopefully I have the same problem you do. Is there anyway to get to it and check it without pulling the manifold or is it completely covered by it?

you can reach it without taking off the manifold...but you wont be able to see...so if you dont know what youre doing, it will be hard to figure out what to do since you cant see anything
