455 motors are great torque monsters, but keep in mind it will be heavier than the 350 chevrolet engine.

Man, the BOP motors(buick,olds,pontiac) are such beasts on the low end, i had a pontiac 455, when i ported some 6x heads, installed a cam and intake with headers it got a crease in the top of the car on a 200 shot, ran great but it mucked up my roof.

Physically the 455 motor will fit. I had a 79 with a 403 and I contemplated the swap as well. I called Mondello's and they said the 455 would use the same motor mounts as the 403 and wouldn't be a problem with the shaker. Worst case is you have to fix the shaker to the hood for the extra clearance instead of on top of the carb.

The 455 will fit your drivers side valve cover is going to be really close to the brake booster. Not that big of an aftermarket though, go to realoldspower plenty of info on there. As for the ? of should you use it . oh yeah even the smog motors have massave amounts of torque. Enjoy your new lack of traction I know I did .

Actually 1978 for auto California cars. My VIN numbers shows that it came with a 403 Olds, currently has a 455 but needs work. I just got the car as a restoration project car for a Bandit Clone.
BTW, the motor will fit on the 403 motor mounts, however the shaker scoop is a problem. The previous owner of this car glued the shaker scoop underneath the hood and the scoop sticks out way to far out IMO, it just doesn't look right. Carb with a small air filter BARELY fits under the scoop.
I am actually going to take this to my mechanic in a few days to see what suggestions they have on keeping the 455, shaker scoop, etc. or changing out the motor. Either way I am going to have to sink some money into the engine. Just want to get a classic car mechanics advise.

I beleive that you can run smaller big block mounts that will give you the clearance needed. If a Pontiac 10.2 deck can fit in there then an Olds block should fit no problem. Manifold choice has a lot to do with it as well, Performer, RPM, or Victor.
I would post a link but it would probably get removed, lol. Basically look for big block frame and motor mounts from a Toronado. Look for the part numbers online and order them repop or take your luck at a local junkyard.

I can only assume this free Oldsmobile 455 was built after GM lowered the compression beginning in 1971. They made so much torque GM installed it into their only venture FWD motor home.
Ashamed, I can't remember the torque in the 1970 - W-30 Olds, I sold them. Advertised as 370 hp. it was every bit of 390. You could order an aluminum case with a 4:33 gear.

Ashamed so I had to look for the torque #'s try 500. Red line was 6,000 perhaps 6,200. Most of that torque was down low. Today, some would call it a good dig car.
Doctor W at Oldsmobile was responsible for the performance. Was one hell of a engine in several old NHRA stock automatic classes.
