Default 2.73 to 3.42 with Yank SS4000

Just put in my Yank SS4000 and it dropped my cars E.T. from 13.4 to 12.4 and this is with my stock 2.73 gears. I just bought a 3.42 rear end from someone and am going to install it but I have two questions first.

Is it worth it? Will I see a significant decrease in E.T. to justify the slight loss in gas mileage?

Right now I hate how much throttle you have give to get the beast going. Will the smaller gear (3.42) help with this as well?

Thanks.

Im no pro but I think a lotta people are gonna recommend 3.73s with a 4000. Your also gonna need a carrier swap as far as I know.

3.42's will be PERFECT...gas mileage won't go down much at all.

Quit being a Sally, put a 4.56 in it !! or buy a cobalt if you want mileage.

2.73->3.42 cost me about 3mpg long term across the board, more loss on highway driving, less in hard/city driving.

It's more than I thought from reading up on here, most people say 1mpg if even that.

I don't have a converter but I'd expect your hits to be similar. It doesn't sound like much but losing $5 a tank and 25-40 miles in range is worth considering.

I have a friend who put 4.56's in and kept blowing 10 bolts up left and right, so I'm going to try and stay away from that.

Thanks for the replys guys, but I realized nomatter what you guys say, I'm just going to have to install it and find out for myself then give my own factual input on it.

And Mr, Red girly trans am guy, I see your from the chicago area. Wanna get down for some small cash on the street?

I've been thinking about going with the same stall, and 3.42's or 3.73's. I think with the 3.42's it would be fun, and still pull. With the 3.73's, you may have a little more low end, but a little less in 3rd. I'm still undecided. Thunder Racing sells 2 series gears, so you won't have to go searching for a 3 series carrier like I am right now. Trying to figure out what to do. Either way, you can't go wrong the car will be fun.

Also, you said you went from 13.4 to 12.4. What did the rest of your times pick up? Could you post a timeslip of the 13.4, and the 12.4? I'd like to see everything if possible. Did your mph suffer?

I have 103K miles on stock everything. My thoughts are that if it breaks, it will give me an excuse to rebuild or replace it with better components.

The lower gears will really help responsiveness from a stop. You may lose 1-2 mpg on the highway (2500 vs. 2000 rpm @ 80mph). I never checked my hwy mileage when I had 2.73's, but there was no difference in town.

Yeah, I was expecting maybe .7 at best, I was surprised as well with a 1 sec drop. I'm glad I picked the 4000 instead of the 3600. I thought to myself "go big or go home" and I am happy with the result.

This is a picture of the old rear. Has everything to just plug in. T/C, brake lines, shocks, brakes, rotors, pads and PHB are included. I am going to keep it around for a few weeks just in case I don't like the 3.42, but after that it will be for sale. Everything included, I need $250.00 plus any shipping or handling. No less, sorry.

I have stock 2.73's now too and have an SS3800 converter to put in. I was debating the same thing 3.42 vs 3.73, and decided on the 3.73's. No real logic other than when it came down to clicking one button or the other, I went with the more aggressive one .

I've had 2.73's, 3.23's, 3.42's, 3.73's, and 4.10's in stalled A4 street cars and my favorite gear by far is the 3.73! You'll turn 2400ish rpm's runnin 70mph (basically with 2.73's pull it in 3rd and drive down the highway....thats about what you will turn rpm wise at 70)

Gas mileage wise, the lower you go in gear the better mileage you'll get around town and worse on the highway. My 4800 stalled 3.73 camaro got an average of 18mpg and that was with a heavy foot.

Lower gears will tighten up the feel of your convertor ALOT as far as part throttle taking off around town too.....You'll like your car alot better with lower gears!

i've been debating on stepping up to 3.73's or 4.10's from my current 3.42's but the drone on the highway is bad enough with the 3.42's. The 3.73's would make it even worse!
