Default What is that skinny wire that connects to the alternator?

It's a small gauge wire that plugs into a 4 pin weatherpack connector. It plugs it on the back of the alternator, above the positive cable.

Anyone know what it is FOR SURE? I broke mine removing the alternator and there wasn't any wire left to solder back together (pulled out of the weatherpack connector). Is it just for the gauge or sensor or something? Or does it have a real purpose? I need to drive to a dealership to pick up the part and I don't want the car to die on me. If it's important to the charging system then I will bum a ride.

Thanks,
Dope

that wire goes to the PCM and 'turns on' the voltage regulator when the car is running - it kinda has to be hooked up to get the alternator charging..

dope I pulled it out too before when installing heads, I just added a little wire, stripped the end of it and pushed it back in the connector, never came out on me since, just make sure you use the right gauge wire.

Thanks guys. I ended up replacing it with a generic 4 pin weatherpack connector from NAPA. Came pre-wired, I just plugged it in and then butt-connectored (that sounds really bad) the 2 wires together. Car works fine and does charge.

My alternator doesn't charge very well anymore. Could that wire be the problem if it is loose?

We recently did a H/C's install

I don't really know what it does, but I do know that it is necessary for the charging system. Just check the wire, it's easy to do. If it's charging at all you're probably fine, I'd check other stuff.

I broke mine after my first alternator uninstall. Painless wiring makes the connector with the wire. I got mine from the local autozone. Just make sure you get the one for the new style alternator, I think it was a 'CS' style alternator or something like that.
