Should a 4.10 gear make any noise?
I have a 4.10 gear in my 98 z. When im driving the gear makes a whining noise between 45-60mph. is there somthing wrong with it or is it common?

They shouldn't be screaming at you, but you will hear them without the stereo on. Mine were set to 0.002" backlash and were surprisingly, but not completely quiet at first. They are more noticeable now after 30,000 miles and 40 plus track passes. Tolerable. There is a definite difference just having the trunk/well flap up or down. No doubt some sound deadening material would help if quiet operation is very important to you.

I've got Richmond 4.10s in my 12 bolt and they were set up about as perfect as possible...Did the proper break in with dino oil and then ran Royal Purple 75-140 in it (car has a spool)...They were quiet on accel and a wee bit noisey on coast, especially between 45-50 mph...Now after a bunch of 1.52 60' lanches they make a bit more noise...As you run them harder especially if you drag race on them, they will probably become a bit more noisey...

They should not make any noise at all. Have you ever heard an s-10 with 4.10gears make noise? Same rear end. I had a set of richmond gears that screamed, changed to motive gears and it wasn't as bad then I bought a 4.10gear from gm that they use in the s-10's and you can't hear anything at all. I learned this when I had my 97 camaro and my 99 trans am. When I installed the gm gears in both cars it sounded stock.

The S10 rear ends were set up dead nuts on with expensive tooling that nobody who does gear swaps has access to. Plus there is no pre-existing wear to deal with like the GM built 4.10 S10 rear end.
Also the torque arm does wierd things to stress the f-body 10 bolt unlike the leaf spring mounted S10 especially when launching hard. The S10 generally is not subjected to high performance V8's like those found in the f-bodies. The torque arm also amplifies any rear end noise.
A lot of people are fortunate to have quiet f-body 10 bolt rear ends just after a gear swap, but in general it does not last if you race, romp on it or launch hard.
It is a fact from researching any f-body message board on the subject of 4.10 gear whine that nearly every body has the harmless faint whining sound usually around 45-60 MPH.

I think you are comparing apples to oranges here.

Expensive tooling? If the pinion depth is set correctly and backlash is within specs the rear end should be quiet. I have never heard a gm 4.10 gear in an f-body that was installed correctly make noise. I have heard motive make alittle noise and richmond's just scream anyway no matter what make or model you put them in. Powerhouse performace in tinley park put in my 4.10 gear's and 4.10's in my buddy's and it made noise and they said it was normal for 10bolt's to do that. I ripped it apart and checked it myself and they had the pinion depth all messed up and there was too much preload. So I redid mine and my buddies and it was quiet. I know there are people who have issues but I still believe a properly installed quality made gear should be pretty quiet.

2vkiller is right, it is all about setting the gears correctly. some gear sets will make some noise while they seat themselves in but it should go away after a hundred miles and a fluid change though. if it doesn't, take it apart and try again.
