08 6.6 dmax vs. 08 6.7 cummins
I have driven both and to me, the dmax seems to have the edge in pretty much every arena. Accel, shifting, ride quality, etc. For you guys that are not buying the dodge as a work truck, what sold you on it? I beat the GM dealer up pretty good and got an '08 crew DRW LWB with all options but leather to $36K, and 4x4 at $39K. The dodges seats are hard as ****, the trim level isnt as nice, and overall the truck just seems to lack in power over the 5.9. Did I hit the nail on the head, or are there factors I am not taking into account? Basically I can get a dodge outfitted about the same for $1K less. Thats not even worth mentioning.

checking in with the 6.7 also.
either way you cant go wrong. i love me cummins for its user friendliness, simplicity, and legendary name bar none. as far as power goes.. dealer info is misleading.. the I6 cummins and the duramax are putting down comparable numbers when tested in the same conditions on the same dynos.

well I think the cummins had the better reputation...but the new dmaxe's are have definitely jumped into the competition quite well this time around. I personally like the styling and look of the new silverado's. both are great trucks and will get the job done.

Motor wise, CMI has the market cornered but I think GM builds a better all around truck. Looks and allison transmission are a huge plus with the chevy. I know my cummins is pretty easy to work on but im not sure about the duramaxes. How come I dont see ford power joke on the list? They are appropriately named "super doody"

This is really just gonna be a who's got what thread. Both trucks are
great with very little differences but comparing reality and not opinions
the Duramax has an Allison automatic and the interior is much nicer.
Other than that price point goes to Dodge .
Good luck with your decision.............

You already know I'm a bigtime Cummins fan, since my last two ('04.5 and '06) were equipped with them. But, I'm going to pass on the 6.7 CTD since it doesn't perform any better than the 5.9 it replaced, and gets worse mileage. Plus, the 5.9 can still run on cheap diesel found at truck stops. With the more strict emissions requirements, they had to increase the size of the CTD to 6.7 just to reach the same level of performance that the 5.9 had.
I'll go Duramax at the moment, it is still a damn good combo of engine/tranny.

If you read the diesel trucks magazine the performance of the Duramax was well beyond the Dodge or the Ford. They raced them in the 1/4 the duramax beat them both by nearly a full second. Then they tested them with loaded trailers and the duramax still laid the smack down.
I say go duramax.
The cummins is a good motor but I personally like the GM trucks.
Besides the new chevys look mean as hell, have better performance and an Allison.

Thanks for the comments. I also dont like the idea of a new platform within its first year of use (6.7). I am going to get the GM, just wanted to hear from some of you owners.
Thanks

Good choice. I love the Cummins, it just happens to be in the wrong truck. I've been scared of the new 6.7s since they came out. I will probably have to buy a used one with the 5.9 when I get back from the desert. I don't want an auto, they just don't sound that great without a muffler, and I like shifting gears now and then.

i'm not trying to sway anybody one way or the other, it doesnt make me a ****. but being a pickup diesel mechanic, i have the hands on in this area.
when the 6.7 was announced, i was not for it one bit. egr and cummins dont mix. besides having the lower power rating than the 5.9. however once on the road the 6.7 has proved to be solid thus far. i know of several 6.7 with the 6spd auto in my area that are oilfield trucks and everybody knows how oilfield related trucks are driven/abused, that are approaching the 100K mile mark and havent had any major problems. so far, the only mechanical problem with the 6.7 is- some trucks have lost their turbo. its an electronic error with the varriable vanes. there havent been any injector problems or "washed" down cyl. that the former 5.9 common rail was noted for.
one more topic dealing with the 6.7 is fuel mileage. at first they, most seem to be horrible. most new 1 ton 4X4s are in the area of 10-13mpg and i dont know of any getting less than 8mpg loaded heavy. however some of those that are "broke in" are getting 16-16.5mpg. the trucks i'm referring to are 9500lb flatbed duallys and cab & chassis trucks. not your typical 6000lb 4dr shortbed 4X4 "grocery getter". and as everybody knows- typically your fuel mileage is based on how you drive your truck.
and as far as having to buy 15ppm diesel, it doesnt matter which make you buy if its 07 and newer.
