Default Flowmaster question

I went to a muffler shop today to price getting a magnaflow muffler on my 99 t/a. The man who owns the shop insists that putting a flowmaster would be just as effective performance wise. I have always heard horrible things about flowmaster and am wondering if he is right.

The flowmaster that was designed to replace the stock muffler is the 80 series crossflow. Yes, it sucks.

However, other flowmaster designs are fine. I run true duals with the 10 series single chambers, and the car runs well.

Would you assume that he is talking about the 80 series crossflow? Would it be easier to just go with the magnaflow

Yeah, I would think so, cause it's what will come up if he looked up what was "designed" for it. A 40 series will fit and sounds nice, and is better than the 80.

The magnaflow will provide you with more power for sure. It's just an open muffler, but I'm not a big fan of the sound. That's strictly my opinion though.

Insist on the Magniflow or go somewhere else. I had the 80 a long time ago, it's weak.

Take a picture of it and post it. The 80 series is larger than the 40 series, both can sit sideways in the stock mufflers location, and since you can get a 40 series 1 in and 2 out as well, it could be either.

Not necessarily. You can also get 40s 1 in, 2 out. I had a 40 like that on my old 95 Z-71 back in high school.

Actually, come to think of it, I believe the 80 will have an outlet on one end, and an outlet AND inlet on the other end. Pretty sure that's how it is. The 40 would be 1 inlet on one end, and dual outlets on the other end. Also, FWIW, there are also other ways that flows have the mufflers arranged. Some are one in, one out, centered. And they also have them available with offsets. Man, I hope I don't get everyone all confused.

Just look on www.summitracing.com, they have a TON of flows to look at, and you can see what looks like yours.

The 80 series cant be that bad performance-wise. I just went from stock manifolds, gutted cats and the LM1 to Pacesetter LTs, ORY, and the Flowmaster 80 catback. The car sounds AMAZING. It has that deep hollow rumble sound to it. The car definately does NOT seem slower, if anything it feels like it pulls harder but that probably is because of the longtubes. Even if the Flowmaster gave up 2 - 5 hp, who cares? The improved sound is a better trade-off in my opinion. I'm not trying to race everybody out there, but then again different strokes for different folks. --Justin

i went with the single chambers with my h-pipe. i've always heard you can get more power out of other mufflers, but unless you really care about every little bit of horse power and aren't willing to sacrifice amazing sound for 5 h.p. at the most, then go with something like a magnaflow. which dont sound bad, just not as good as the flowmaster, imo.

I had the EXACT setup as you on my previous car. Trust me, any gains you received are from the headers. I had the 80 series on my previous car, and gained NOTHING over the stock muffler. When I got the long tubes is when I could feel a difference. Then I swapped to a Hooker catback and I could feel a difference again.

It's general knowledge here on tech that the 80 series cross flow isnt good for power. If you like it for the sound, that's fine. If you want to sound good AND make power, go with another muffler, or true duals with single chambers (if you like the sound of flows).

A friend of mine had a FM 80 on his car with Pacesetter LT's/ORY. I had a Hooker lying around, so he installed it. He admitted that the car felt torquier with the Hooker, but put the FM back on because he liked the sound so much more.
