almost everything would swap over to a 6.0 block, even your crank and rods. you could get an iron block for cheap and use everything but your pistons. with those 243 heads and some forged pistons you would have a stout motor. or you could forget the forged pistons and find some lq9 pistons, they are flat top and would bump your compression.

Holy Caps...Why would you get a expensive project like heads and cam done with such high miles without running some tests on the engine. You should have just saved for a complete rebuild in the 1st place...Might have taken longer to save but you would have had a fresh engine.

You can find a short block pretty cheap. You can pull a 5.3, 6.0 out of any truck at a junk yard and it will work fine. There are alot of ls vehicles with low miles that have been totaled. Also check ebay or the for sale section on here and you will prolly find somthing at a decent price.

This is why I've always been reluctant to swaping heads on a high mileage motor. Cam swaps seem to be ok, but I hear too many horror stories about swapping heads on high mileage motors and then having bearing failure right after. I think taking the heads off allows the block to tweak just enough to screw up the bearings.

I'd probably try to score a 6.0 block and go from there.

With that many miles I would have just done a rebuild.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

You have options here. First off, if you have to replace anything and are on a budget then stick with that, dont be made to feel like you did something terrible by trying to add parts to a high mileage car. Plenty of people have added heads, cam on HM and been fine, some have had issues like yourself, it happens with low mileage cars as well. If you read the 98 block has its downfalls you can search them. Budget wise if you can get what you have fixed for a decent price then I say go for it. If you want that little extra insurance, do as the previous gentleman stated and look for a iron block 6.0 or just low mileage shortblock and swap your cam and heads into that and get a pretty tight setup i may add. Im in the same boat. Have a high milage 98 that is getting cam and nitrous. I have had it checked it checks out super on compression and everything but i still worry. And as far as ebay being bad idea. I disagree just make sure you contact the seller and check feedback. Iv purchased engines off of ebay and had not issues but i did my homework on the seller and stuff first. But thats just my .02. Keep us updated on what you do and how it works out.

shipping on an engine is usually somewhere around like $100....

I'm also in the same boat... my car is in the shop right now because of a suspected rod knock... The engine is being pulled apart this week and we are gonna see where i set... I don't know if i'm gonna try forging my '99 LS1 w/118k miles or try to find a budget shortblock somewhere.... my valvetrain is brand new and I have a new cam as well... it would be nice if i can get a 6.0 block and somehow get a set of heads out of all this too... budget is always the issue...
