Help me choose a CAM!!!!
Ok well I havnt been able to decide on a cam and I have bombarded poor pat g with a million PM'S.........my goal is a streetable cam, good midrange and torque that will go good with my stock heads, and my following mods
lt headers
3in ory
ported/polished throttle body
dmh e-cutout
slp dual/dual catback
mti lid
My first choice was the famous reverse split
TR 230/224 .575/.563 111 LSA
but wanted a little more so pat g speced me- 230/230 .612/.604 110LSA +2. on newer Comp XFI
i still wanted a little bigger so pat g speced me- 236/236 .615/.607 110LSA +4 using Comp XFI lobes.
i thought it was great on power but on stock heads and 16 degress of overlap i wanted a little more milder so again pat g speced me this-
232/232 .612"/.604" 110LSA +2
which is where im at now......I just want everyones opinions on these cams, I want the perfect street strip cam

Man, after going through the same stupid time wasting process, I gotta go back to what worked for me and hundreds of others. 224/224 581 581 112+2 XER or 224/228. It's tried and true, runs the numbers and is a "little" cam. Kind of wish I had one laying around just to do dyno runs on it after I finish with the bolt ons with my F14 highlift.

230/230 .612 .590 with 107 ICL with +4 advance so 111LSA
and i had .072 Ptv clearance on intake and somewhere around .130-.140 on exhaust...so i decided to retard it 2 degrees with my double roller to gain a little more clearance and now i am at .086 on the intake...
i am getting it tuned at speed inc on friday so i will let you know how it does...
i would lean towards the 232/232 cam that sounds like a winner...

I forget exactly how it went but it was something like this
Me: are you going to run this cam or are you going to change your mind again
You: oh no man I'm dead set on this one.
me:
Just kiddin ya. I voted for the 232/232. I wouldn't go any bigger than that for a daily driver. I would stick to the 232 or smaller. The bigger cams are for the weekend warriors and strip cars.

you need to decide what u want, cause you will either replace it yourself or pay some one to do it for you. I voted for 236/236. I'm running 231/236 .589/.595 112+4. mine is a weekend warrior with ocasionally 160 miles to San Antonio one way. just depends what you are looking for. good luck with ur choice......

Remember going bigger and bigger doesn't mean it is going to go faster, with the bigger cams you'll start needing to run more gear or stall (auto) to get the real performance from it.
Also if you ever plan to add nitrous to the car it'll work better with a wider lobe, 112 or 114.

I would hedge towards the conservative side when choosing cams... who are you out to beat? What record are you going to break? You're not right? So try not to go crazy and pick the biggest one, a few horsepower isn't worth being unhappy when it's all said and done.
I liked the cam Patrick G speced for my application, works well. $25 bucks is cheap for what he considers when he specs a cam for you.

In my previuos car I went with a comp
226/228 .588/.588 on a 114. I installed it at 112.
01'ws6 m6
3,600lb race weight Mods: tune/mid length headers, ory, open cut out, 12bolt w/411's and clutch the car went 11.85 at 118.20.
It still got 28 mpg on the highway and DD was no issue.
Like Ragen said with the bigger ones you'll also have to watch valve spring wear on a daily driver.
Good luck on your choice!
