LS1 into 96 audi a4 quattro
I just bought this A4 quattro, and i think it needs a transmission, so Im kickin around the idea of an LS1 transplant. Does anyone know of this being dont before? I would make it RWD only, so I could use a t56... any input?

Sounds like a cool conversion if it fits.Never heard of one being done though. If there is no history on this swap you need to do some accurate measuring snd look for interference issues....steering shaft and rack, hood height, engine bay fit, exhaust, etc. or just yank out that ole 4 banger and make it fit!! ;-)

I've been thinking about this swap for quite a while now and I think its very possible. That chassis fits a 90 degree DOHC V6 so its definitely wide enough as for the length I'm not sure. I'm doing and engine R&R as we speak to an 03 Passat which is the same chassis as the A4. I don't have an LS1 handy but I could take some measurements of the engine compartment if you like. You wiil have to use a front sump oil pan for sure. The fact that your car is AWD all you'd have to do run a custom drive shaft to the stock diff which might hold for a while. You might have to upgrade to an S4 diff/axles or better if your going anything over a stock LS1 though.

Since the engines in Audis sit so far ahead of the front wheels, I think this is not going to work. I know that Stasis did a VR swap and had to move the radiator because of length. I know that the LS1 is longer than a VR so this might be a huge issue, handling would be a major issue with all the weight ahead of the axle like that. Props for the thought though, would be cool to see for sure.

I've actually been trying to do some research on this matter for my passat, I'm not sure about the 96 but my 2000 has a double firewall, what about cutting the front firewall out? Then on the other hand, how much bigger is the ls1 compared to the 4.2 in the s4's? I think the 4.2 is actually bigger on the out side... its a massive little motor
