EGR, take it off?
I have a 2000 tran am, WS-6 and it has the EGR(dont know if that stock). Im planning on getting LT headers with dummy cats.WELL....
....I read up on what it does and it says if it will cause pinging. Well i always pump 91 cheveron fuel and it pings at high RPM's sometimes. I use octane booster to eliminate it but sooner or later it comes back. Could the EGR be cause this pinging. why?
And should i just take it off or leave it on since im getting headers? HELP.
THANKS GUYS.

I have a 00 ss, just put long tubes on. I ditched the egr. No pinging issues. Haven't had them before either though.
EGR lowers exhaust temps to reduce NOx emissions. This is done by adding used exhaust gases back into the cylinder before combustion. Running no EGR will cause higher combustion temps which could lead to knock. If this happens, the knock sensor picks it up and backs off timing.
Just noticed you live in Cali. You probably won't pass emissions without egr. I don't know much about IM over there, except they're strict.

The turbulance of a empty can dummy cat will cost you just as much power as a real cat, maybe more. A good set of 3" dual cats will cost you under 10HP and they make the exhaust sound much better IMHO.
The EGR valve is only open during light throttle mid range RPM driving and actually decreases the chance or spark knock when operating right. Since your in CA and you might not always have someone to get you through insp I'd leave it on. It's not costing you a thing power wise.
My vote is to stay legal. The cost in power is negligable and it might save you money and problems in the future.

Hey Mission, I'm from Pacifica down my SF... I would definately recommend doing dummy cats it's a great way to keep cops off you ***, as for egr I dont think you will have any problems with pinging there.... Just make sure that you have the right block off plates otherwise you'll get annoying exhaust leaks
