Default which heads to go with G5X3

I have a G5X3 cam ready to install and am now thinking about changing heads from my stock 241/LS1 heads at the same time.

What head matches this cam? I know LG likes the AFRs - but those are too much $$$.

My mods are:

2004 C5 coupe
4.10 gears
LT headers
CAI
160 stat

Let me know your thoughts.

It depends on your budget, but the cheapest way to get some gains would be some stock LS6/LS2 castings. These are usually good for about 10+rwhp/tq over the 241 castings throughout the entire powerband. If you budget allows more money to be sent, I would go with those exact castings, just ported.

I wouldnt waste the time for a stock 243 head. Pickup a set of PRC Stage 2.5 5.3's or something like that from Texas Speed.. 1/2 the price of AFR's and a nice head.

The AFR's have more valve drop and therefore will allow you to run more compression while maintaining the same PTV as the stock heads. Something to consider whether to wait to buy another head. Personally I would wait until I could afford the AFR's and only do the work once.

This is actually a very good point. With whatever you choose, if you want to make the most out of your setup look into thinner gaskets and a flycut...and possibly milling of the heads. The G5X3 thats on a 112 LSA, has reported an average of around .070/.110" p to v clearance...the 114 having slightly more. This is the absolute minimum most like to see for clearance. It doesn't leave any room for milled heads, thinner gaskets to maximize your setup. One advantage the AFRs do have is the ability to be milled and have the same or additional clearance so Flycutting is not necessarily needed.

So many options and all depend on your budget!

I just bought a set of AFR heads. Had them sent off to be ported and milled. Im still on my stock bottom end, so Im going to have to flycut my pistons with the cam I'm using. I should have some dyno numbers up soon. Just so you can have an idea if AFR's are worth the money. For those that are curious, the cam I am running is a 243.5/250.2 duration at .050, .610"/,612" lift, with a 110 LSA.

Also if you don't want to spend quite as much as AFR's, you might want to take a look at Texas Speed's Terminator heads.

Save your money and buy the AFR's. I have run 3 different heads on my car and I wish I would have just spent the money the first time around and got the AFR's. You obviously have invested in one of the best cams out there, why cheapen it by trying to put together a combo that isn't proven like the AFR/G5X combo. That's just my opinion brother. GL.

Lots of good advice.

I am leaning toward saving up the $$ and going with the AFRs.

That is what LG promotes and since I have their kit - it would be a match.

Anyone else want to share some thoughts??

Thanks

I am running the G5X3 in my Fbod along with bolt on's, 3600stall, stock 243's..( upgraded valvetrain ofcourse) and these are fine for now.

I plan on ported heads soon.

I am putting down 403/405 to the wheels... Some good heads would wake things up!!

Good luck.

We would be glad to go over some options with you. We can do our CNC ported 243's starting at $1095.00 per pair fully assembled with our Patriot Gold springs.

if you could save, definitely go with AFR or the TRICKFLOWS. but it is hard to beat the PRC and patriots performance heads for the price. also some MTI heads arent that bad either.

Wow, your set up is very similar to what I am leaning towards. I would love to see your #s and the dyno sheet.

Thanks for posting.
