What does detonation sound like?
I have one bank running very lean and the only sound I hear is a hollow thud sound coming from the engine at times. Is this detonation?

Re: What does detonation sound like?
Hell yes. ONLY use super unleaded.
Try and find out why your getting so much detonation. Consider changing gasoline brands. I have had good luck with Exxon 93.
Consider going to a cooler thermostat.
If you hear the detonation get out of it and do NOT continue to dog it when it is all heated up and hot. ESPECIALLY once you have heard detonation.
Consider going to a one step colder plug. like the NGK TR6's
Heck i would recommend you do that anyways.

Quick,
I'd be concered and check into it considering you've got a nice 227 cam that should have helped eliminate the ping ping. The overlap of the bigger cams bleeds cylinder pressure off so normally car car won't ping after the cam unless the tune is off or the compression really jacked up.
My car pinged stock, after heads and cam and 1 point increase in compression the ping is gone, I use the same gas I always used.

Re: What does detonation sound like?
I think I've been getting detonation also. It dosen't happen all the time, but when it does it seems like it's only above 5K. All I have is a lid, FRA, and De-screened MAF.
I never use anything under 91 octane. Help!

Maybe someone could take a sound clip of Tiger Woods and loop it 50 times and speed it up.
If you have pinging with a stock car you might have a lot of carbon buildup... does the car have high miles or get driven in a lot of bumper/bumper traffic? GM Top Engine cleaner would be a good idea.

This could be completely way off base here...but...
Get a stock MAF with the screen in it, borrow a friends if you have to, but that might be your problem...taking the screen out of the MAF causes the motor to run leaner...
We found this out with a few members here in the hot Az weather.
EDIT: I posted this for the guys who have basically stock cars
