How far fom the top of the pan is the oil level supposed to be when "full?" I'm doing a swap into a 71 vette and I don't have the original dipstick for this six liter. I have a lokar dipstick and it looks like the level should be right at the bottom of the windage tray. That seems a little high to me.

What does the stock stick say?

7qts in my heavily modified truck pan is 1 5/8" below the pan rail, 8 qts is about 1 1/8."

Personally I would just put 6 quarts in it and mark the stick with a file or something similar.

What type of engine and pan are you using.. I would look up the spec and fill it up to that. Start it up to make sure the oil has been through the system and the oil filter is filled. Turn it off and wait a few min's. then just check and mark the stick.

Motor is a truck 6.0, pan is also truck, but modified heavily. It looks a lot like an F body pan now, 5.5 inches deep, 14" long sump. I should have just bought one of those right off the bat, but this way was $200 cheaper.

The lokar dipstick goes straight in and it looks like "full" would put the oil level right at the bottom of the windage tray. I think that's too high. Someone has to have a picture of the a stock motor with the pan off. I really just want to know how high the oil is supposed to be on a stock motor. I don't know if my dipstick is accurate or not. I can't compare it to the stock one because it was rusted in and broke.

if i get a chance today, i'll take my dipstick and tube, not installed yet, and take a meas from where it meets the block to full mark, that should give you an idea

ok, i ran out and took a meas of my dipstick-with the d/s installed in the tube, i measured from a point where it hits the block (there is a rib thats on the tube that hits the block, about 5/16" above the o-ring) to the fill mark, and it is 4 7/8"
so basically about 4 13/16 to 4 7/8 below the block is fill
i have a caddy cts pan & matching d/s, but i would think all fill levels should be the same
hope that helps, there were 2 other holes in the stick for low oil, i can meas them if you wanted, for low oil

Does that stick go straight in to the block or does it curve down at all?

it seems to be pretty straight, i think the hole in the block is at a little bit of an angle-i can shoot a pic of the stick/tube later
one thing i prob didnt make clear when i said below the block, i ment below the d/s hole in the block, to be aprx 4 13/16 to 4 7/8" to fill
