Default how to tell the difference?

how can you tell the difference between 4l60 and 4l80. can you tell by looking at them or do you have to run the numbers. if you have to run the numbers, where do you find them. i bought a 99 ss and it has an open bell housing on it, so that threw me off on which one it is. any input would be helpful. thanks.

By describing an open bellhousing I am going to presume that it is an 80E. It will have two identical speed sensors.

where are the speed sensors located. don't know a lot about trans. what would a good rebuild kit cost for the 80e that would hold around 5oo to 600 horses in the future. already has a stall, but slips at high rpms going from 2nd to 3rd. 1st to second is strong though. thanks.

Doh... sorry about that... the 2 speed sensors are located on the drivers side of the case. One is just behind the bellhousing and the other is in front of the tailhousing. They are pretty obvious.

A well built 4L60E would run somewhere in the $1,800 - $2,2000 range.

If you would like to discuss some options feel free to give me a shout... I'm at the shop M-F 8:00 - 8:00 most days and Sat. from 8:30 a.m. until it makes sense to knock off.

4L60E has rectangular pan, 4L80E has different shaped pan.

By reading this thread I'm a little confused. Is your trans a 4 speed trans or a three speed? Here a couple photos of a 4l60e and a 4l80e.

4l60e

Here is the 80.
