Default Exhaust on a v6

Ive got a 99 firebird with the 3.8 v6 with pacesetter mid-length headers and the y pipe, with no cat, and a stock t/a muffler. It dont sound bad in the low rpms like below 3000 but once it gets high it has a really bad raspy sound to it, Im thinking about cutting my y pipe in half right before it y's together and running true duals out the back, but im not sure what mufflers would give me a good rumble sound out of a v6. Im pretty set on running duals cause when we put the headers on we fired it up and reved it up, its sounded good like the meanest v6 on the planet lol, but as soon as we bolted up the y pipe it had the raspy v6 sound that everyone hates. So i was thinkin if i keep them seperated it might maintain the rumble. Any suggestions?

The 3800 V6 is VERY hard to get to sound good. They have horrible problems with rasp and drone. The best way to get rid of both of these is with a good, LONG, glasspack or resonator. Mufflers WILL NOT remove rasp or drone, you need a res to do that for you.

IMO, being a former 3.8L owner, get a cutout. It helps eliminate most of the rasp. You're not going to be able to eliminate it all. Don't get true duals, I think they sound like **** on a V6 car. For more V6 help, check out Fullthrottlev6.com or the V6 section of Fbody.com.

It's going to be really hard to make a V6 sound decent (or at least avoid the buzz saw sound). You can get a decent rumble at idle, but more times than not that's the only time it'll sound decent.

Yeah I'm a fellow 6er and have only found one exhaust clip of someone's set up that I liked so thats what I'm going with- Pacesetter headers, !cat, Edelbrock cat-back system. Not sure about the rules on posting links to the forum where I found the clip, but contact me if you wanna hear it, it sounds great except at very high RPMs.

Yeah bud, I'm sorry but I don't think there's any way you're gonna make it sound good. Exhaust will sound pretty decent at idle, but as soon as you tap that throttle forget about it. I know where you're coming from as I own a V6 myself.

It's the 3.1L V6 though. It has stock manifolds/2.5" Ypipe/no cat/ 2.5" catback w/ Flowmaster 80 series. It sounds pretty damn good for a V6, especially at idle. But once I get on it, there is no question it is a V6. At WOT it sounds like a damned chainsaw. I would just keep it quiet or save for a V8. Exhaust on the V6 doesn't give you much power anyway.
