383 motor im thinking about selling but I have some questions first. I had a 383 built awhile back that was balanced with a 400 balancer and the fly wheel from my 90 camaro. If someone wanted to buy it for an auto would they be able to put a flex plate on it and a fluid dampener and not have issues or have to get it rebalanced I guess?

They would need to purchase a external balance dampner and a external balance flexplate (one or two piece rear main seal depending on the block used). It would be best if you could have the old flywheel spun up and checked to make sure the new flexplate matches it.

i balance cranks everyday. was the motor externally balanced before. if it had forged internals more than likely it is inernally balanced. if thats the case, and internal balancer and flywheel/flexplate will work. if it is externally balanced, you will need to balance the crank again with the balancer and flexplate. unless you can wiegh the new flexplate and balancer to within a few grams of the original ones. if thats the case, you should be fine. but a new balancer and flexplate will have to be balanced with the crank. unfortantely, that's why externally balanced engines are not the way to go for high performance application. any more questions let me know.

The OP said that it was origionally balanced with a 400 balancer and a one piece rear main seal flywheel (1990), which is a external balance flywheel. Since he is going to use a Fluidampner, which you can't modify for balance, he doesn't need to worry about it. He needs to check the flexplate for balance in relation to what the old flywheel balance point was. This should get things close to the old balance job, but not exact. For a performance engine, internal balancing is worth its weight in gold for just about everything related to the internal engine!!!!!!!

This motor was out of a truck I had it balanced with my 90 flywheel. It is a 1 piece real seal roller block. The crank is cast but the rods are h-beam forged. The balancer is very much like this 1 http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
if not the exact one ide have to check though. It had a weight bolted on it and you could bolt different size weights on it if you wanted which I think they did when balancing.
