Default Oil pressre and a turbo...

I've got a 00' WS6 Built 347, and an STS turbo. Im noticing my oil pressure dropps to about 15lbs at idle at a red light, then goes up under acceleration to around 50lbs. Does this sound right. I didnt know that if the oil being pulled out at the oil filter fitting for the turbo is killing my oil pressure... Can you guys help..??? Thanks

oil pressure fluctuation is normal with rpms. how much did it fluctuate before?

all vehicles that have a real gauge fluctuate with rpm.

15 psi at idle is fine. and is nothing to worry about, unless all of the sudden it dropped from 30 at idle. to 15 at idle. then i would be a little concerned about a bearing.

it also depends on what clearances the bearings had when it was built.

thats what im starting to think it might be i bought the motor last year from a guy on here. built by speedinc has less then 1500 miles on it,my car is fine at start up 40psi then after about 10 minutes of driving it started to drop pressure down to 15psi ive havent drove it since last year.

40psi to 15psi after warm-up is fine.

as long as it didnt use to warm-up and idle at 30psi.

8-10 psi per 1000 rpm is gm's spec in the service manual. It will be higher on a cold motor and go down after warm up.

My car is kinda doing the same thing but mine gets around 35 p.s.i. at hot idle. My car use to never get below 40 p.s.i. at hot idle(before the turbo install). I kinda figured something was wrong with the motor but, I don't hear the motor making any different sounds. And she runs strong and it is jumps to about 50-60 p.s.i. when I go WOT and the rpm's climb up.

When I first crank the beast up it's around 65 lbs, then slowly goes down after about 10 min to around 15 - 20 lbs at idle, then under normal acceleration it's around 35 - 40. I know that a fluctuation under acceleration is normal, but the 15 lbs at idle sort of scared me. My Vette never goes below 40, ever...!!!!

just so you guy know I dont have a turbo yet but my car is at 17 psi hot at idle. havent driven it in a while it under the knife but its a bone stock 98 60K miles.
I was worried at first, some say the factory gauge is way off, some say it just normal.
BUT check this out...... my cars gauge reads 20 then 40 then 60. the needle is just below the 20 mark, my budddys 2002 gauges read 40 then 60 then 80 hmmm. his hot idle needle is in the same postition as mine but acording to his gauge it at 37 to 38. maybe pontiac did this on purpose.
nobody want to see 17 psi of oil pressure.

What weight oil are you using? Speed Inc. just built me a boost 347 and told me to run 20W-50 Valvoline VR1 oil. I imagine if they recommend running 20W-50, they have them set up with quite a bit of clearance, so running a lighter weight oil would hurt drop your oil pressure considerably.

you can drill and tap your factory one out, but at the price you can get the one aove for, it wouldnt make good sense...........drill bit+tap, will be almost as much as the piece already made.

i had the drill bit and tap and still bought the piece!
