tranny gurus...5th gear needs help?!?
I can't shift into 5th gear. When I try to put it in 5th it grinds and wont actually ever engage in 5th. The grind does not sound like a missed shift though. I can actually leave the shifter almost all the way in 5th without pulling it back to neutral, but it never engages 5th. Do yall think it is the 5th gear, or synchro, or what? When I get my tax return back, I am gonna fix it, but want an idea on what it is. Any ideas??

Sounds like the dog teeth on the blocker ring and possibly the 5th gear teeth as well. the teeth get rounded off and then the gear won't stay in guaged. In your case they may be rounded off bad enough that it won't hold in gear at all.

Yes it could. The blocker ring is the brass part of the syncro that actualy locks in with the speed gear (5th gear). The syncro has multiple parts so that is what I meant, sorry if I wasn't specific.

First off it is NOT the brass part that locks the speed gear. It is actually the sleeve of the synchronizer. The synchronizer blocker ring for this gear is actually a friction-lined powdered metal part- NOT brass.Your problem is most likely rooted in the shift fork(bent) or the damage from repeated clash shifts.Even damaged shift fork pads can give your concerns. Only a teardown will find that out.

not sure but mine won't go into 5th if I downshift from 6th. I always have to go up to it. Even if I never release the clutch but go into fourth then 5th. I have a rebuild kit but i won't have the time to tear it apart for a while
