Default Which ECM do I need to get??

Hey guys, I just realized that I might need to get a little bit... "creative" when it comes to making every part of my swap work together. Given the fact that I'm going to be using a T56 with one of the derailed '08 L92 engines - and since I'm fairly sure that they never offered a T56 in one of those trucks, is anyone here able to tell me which ECM I should get to make it all work together??

Right now I'm thinking that I might be able to get away with using a Vette ECM, but I'm really not sure. Any constructive thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated...

Maybe one of the GM harness kits they offer now for the LS3 would be a good start. They have a VSS connection that goes to the tranny and thats about all the ECM cares about.... It comes with a E67 ECM.

None of the GM harnesses are going to match up correctly to that L92 without lengthening some wires and changing some things. Besides that, you would have the wrong software in the computer for your engine. It would need different maps in it for air and fuel than any of those kits would come with.
I would think the Vette computer is the right way to go. A proper tuner should be able to make it run the L92 correctly.

I'd say a newer GTO harness would probably be the closest factory harness that you'll find since it is drive by wire, but still has a traditionally mounted manual transmission. That is assuming that you aren't going to enable the displacement on demand.

Give one of the many tuners that advertise on the board a call and I'm sure they can get your PCM tuning taken care of easily.

That probably won't work because all of the GTO's were 24 tooth motors and I'm almost certain his is 58. I don't think the e40 can run a 58 tooth motor. Only E38 and E67.

BTW you don't have a bubby named Brandon do you?

I believe some of the later LS2 powered GTOs had 58x reluctor wheels in them, so they should work. There is a bunch of debate about it though, so the original poster will want to verify that before buying one.

If you meant to ask if I have a buddy named Brandon, I've got a few. Think we have a common aquaintence or something?

Well, I've heard that the truck ECM can be modified with a T-56 tune, so that part might be easy. Might need to modify the harness for the right connectors though...

EDIT: For the sake of completeness, I'd prefer to keep the L92's VVT, but if that negates the use of the T-56, I'll keep the trans & convert the engine to work like a "normal" LSx...

no, there are no GTO's that have a 58x reluctor, since they all run the E40 ecm.

I purchased my 2006 LS2 GTO for the E40 ecm in it, and I assure you even a late built 2006, is still an E40.

Official thread hijack in process...

I bumped into a dude named Brandon around here the other day while I was getting my x-pipe welded up who said he had a buddy in the middle of ls6/t56 swap third gen rx-7. Just saw your sig and shot in the dark.... small world.

Well, thanks for the feedback guys. Does anyone know how much the truck wiring harness would need to be modified in order to use the T-56 tranny??

(Is that maybe listed somewhere?? Thanks.)

Default Debate on this at GTO forum

Seems there is some debate about this on the GTO forum as well..

From the thread at this link the claim appears to be that there was a swap at some point in the 06 model GTO from 24x to 58x..

Also from this thread, the claim is that if you have a black crank sensor you have a 24x reluctor and grey would be 58x.

IF you have the ECU then this would be easily identified as well..

But if your like me, and purchased the motor without the ECU then this was an easy way to ID what I have..

I do in fact have a 24x reluctor LS2.

Also GTO crankshaft part #s from GM are all the same in 05 and 06. Which come with the reluctor wheel.

Is the following correct when it comes to the Gen-4 PCM's?

E40

3-plug harness, 24x reluctor, came in the GTO

E67

2-plug harness, 58x reluctor, VVT, AFM/DOD, used in the Escalade and other trucks with the L92

E38

2-plug harness (pinouts the same as E67 minus AFM/DOD ???), 58x reluctor, no VVT, no AFM/DOD, used with LS2, LS3 and LS7

Are there any other Gen-4 PCM's?

Not quite...
E40 - 3 plugs, 24x Reluctor, came in 05-06 GTO, 05 Corvette, 05-06 Trailblazer V8, SSR, and probably some other stuff too.

E67 - 3 plugs, 58x reluctor, came in 07-up Trailblazer, Cadillac CTS-V, and probably some other stuff also.

E38 - 2 plugs, 58x reluctor, came in 06-up Vette, 07-up (new body style) Full size GM trucks & SUV's (4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 6.2, and I think even the 4.3L).

Pretty sure that those are the only Gen 4 ECM's.

Even those descriptions are not 100% correct, because I'm sure there are variations on years and other vehicles that use these computers too, but that is a pretty good rule of thumb.

Good info.

So both the E67 and E38 support AFM/DOD and VVT?

I would not be surprised if ll replacement cranks for GTOs are 58 tooth cranks. The info above about the early ones being 24 and later ones being 58 is correct to my knowledge. The switch took place mid 2005. You can tell which is which by the color of the crank sensor.

I have one of Shaun's L92s as well, but I basically changed it over to an LS3. I used the L76 GMPP intake kit and swapped in an LS7 cam, Patriot dual springs, Ti retainers, and pushrods. I ditched the VVT and I am running Corvette accessories. I got a GMPP harness kit for under $1000 that included the MAF, ECU, 2 O2 sensors and the e67 ECU. Mine has a tune for an LS7 and the drivability is perfect. WOT is a little fat, about 11:1, but i plan on tuning that out. The combo drives awesome and made 418rwhp with a glass smooth idle. Trapped 111 mph with a race weight of 3950 pounds. All the details in my build thread. Link in sig.

No, to my knowledge, the E67 and E38 both can support DOD, but the E38 is the only one used on the VVT systems.
