Default 9'' or 12 bolt?

hey ppl im getting a new rear end for my 67 camaro and im still not sure on what to get...i heard that the 9'' rear end u loose about 30-40 rwhp since it is so heavy to push that gears on that rear end.....is this true...would a 12 bolt be better on the car....btw im getting around 400 hp on the 67 so thats what im trying to work with....

ok first off you will lose about 30rwhp with a 9" but its not due to the weight of the gears, its because of the offset pinion design, which also makes it stronger.

also the 12bolt will also zap hp compared to something like our 7.5" ring geared 10bolt.

Personally if the car is going to be stick I would always go with a 9". with an auto I think the 12 bolt will be ok. But why take a chance go with a 9" and dont be worrying about if your going to break things

Tell us what the car is gonna be used for first... if youre gonna never run sticky tires a 10 bolt will be fine. Hell a 12 bolt will be fine with 500 hp ... also the 12 bolt design isnt best for modern F bodys, the 67 camaros have a different rear suspension. so a 12 bolt might be alright for even high hp applications...

ask around more...

you will be fine with both....personally, i think a 9" is overkill for your plans with the vehicle...

No way in hell you lose 30rwhp with a 9in! My car made 432rwhp and then after the 9in it made 423rwhp. This was a 9in with 4.11 gears going from a 10 bolt with 3.42s. If youre going to get an aftermarket rear, 9in is the only way to go man. Ive had them both, and id never buy another 12 bolt.

exactly, 12 bolt + torque arms are a recipe for massive gear whine

Chances are you will end up with a lot of wheel hop if you punch it anyway, unless you get a 4 link suspension to match. Something to consider before you place your order!

Hindsight can be a Bitch.

? LCA's and a torque arm should be more then enough to fix the wheelhop. Did you do a 4 link?

It's been said before but here it goes again.....

The 67 does not have a TQ arm.

What kills the 12bolts in the TQ arm cars is case deflection due to the mounting location of the tq arm, in a leaf spring ladder bar car it will be just as good as a 9" until you get into crazy tq numbers and need the 40spline axles.

no.... Some unforeseen changes and scheduling conflict have left me high and dry at the moment. Still pushing to get everything sorted out but 2 major items are out of my direct control.
